presentation of the FTR 1200 Rally 2023
With its FTR 1200, Indian wanted to bring the spirit of Flat Track to the road. It was also an opportunity to debut a much beefier engine than the usual American one. From the roadster, not too much displacement and enough watts to surprise observers. Over 120 horsepower from a 1200, not seen since the 1250 V-Rod. The whole FTR family benefited from a few improvements in 2021 (my2022) - here, they were limited to better engine response and the grafting of a rear cylinder deactivation system at idle. But there's more to come ;-)
Between each piston stroke, the FTR thinks of its Scout FTR 750 circuit cousin, of the plumes of earth it lifts, of the fashion for path-hungry wheels that only see asphalt. It then took on a rougher stance and added accessories to become the FTR 1200 Rally.
A bit of a scrambler, isn't it? Not quite, but it does have some of the same attributes. The most obvious is the use of spoked rims; more for style than function, as the machine has neither the look nor the presentation of an off-road machine. Yet the bike insists on this desire, as evidenced by the large-block tires, Pirelli Scorpion Rally STRs. These mixed rubber compounds are quite versatile, and a real pain in the ass as long as the terrain isn't too greasy.
A small windscreen protects the speedometer. The ProTaper handlebars are 50 mm higher, for a more upright, relaxed riding position.
The FTR 1200 Rally also comes with a custom brown seat, cruise control, USB port for charging nomadic devices, LED headlight and turn signals, tubular steel trellis frame, inverted fork and radial Brembo 4-piston brakes.

Added to this is traction control, supervised by an inertial unit. In this way, the guardrail's intervention is adjusted according to the angle taken by the machine, as is the ABS, which becomes cornering. On the instrumentation side, everything goes high-tech with a 10 cm circular TFT screen. The rider will be able to use the RideCommand system, with Bluetooth management, phone pairing, GPS navigation... and all at the touch of a finger, since the window is touch-sensitive.
Indian has also reworked the braking system for a firmer feel, but without specifying how. The clutch has been changed, again with performance in mind. Finally, all FTRs benefit from a new sport exhaust system.
Lovers of American motorcycles will attach more importance to the torque in force, with a maximum of 12 mkg . Thus equipped, the Indian FTR 1200 Rally can taunt the terraces, the simili-scramblers and the lakeside paths. Trails, that is, that are suitable for motorized traffic; not the paths where trees grow.
