presentation of the 990 SM Supermoto 2008
after the hypersports, it's now the turn of the supermotards to enter the arms race. More horsepower, more sport, more top-of-the-line equipment for the KTM Supermoto, now with 999 cc.
oli the Belgian had already been thrilled by the 950 during his test ride... What will he think of this new version of the Supermoto? With 17 more horsepower in the twin-cylinder, the KTM takes performance up a notch. Torque is also up, albeit slightly. For some time now, the large supermotard segment has been expanding, with machines such as the Ducati 1100 Hypermotard and BMW HP2 Enduro posing a threat to the KTM. And look out, the Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro is set to shake things up a bit. The Austrian factory is giving Supermoto more resources and, above all, more watts to defend its territory and climb the most devilish tracks.
The rider will even be able to enjoy it for longer, thanks to a 1.5-liter larger fuel tank. This is all the more reason to get to know the new chromium-molybdenum frame, whose steering column has been straightened for even greater agility.
The redesigned frame is a little more refined (but still just as bestial), and the chassis is ready to harness the power of the rider-engine tandem. Big 48 mm inverted forks with 4-piston radial calipers and White Power damping will calm the road. The KTM Supermoto oscillates between toy, tool and high-voltage machine, with its consequent seat height, raised pot, cornering and high-dose kick-out. The dashboard is more complete, a real improvement over the previous, overly minimalist console (no rev counter, which was a bit mean-spirited for a machine costing over 11,000 euros...). Its 191 kg (without petrol) may be a bit of a mouthful compared with the lightness of a single-cylinder supermotor, but the twin's big potato and KTM's experience are enough to make many people agree.

The only hitch is the seat height... less than 1m70 and it's hard to handle it at a standstill or at low speed. However, as soon as you've passed the first 10 km/h, the 100-hp mountain bike jumps out at you :)
One hell of a machine!
Incisive on corner entry, an amazingly precise and easy front end, perfectly controlled mass transfer, hypersport braking, irreproachable roadholding whatever the state of the asphalt
Reacceleration is exceptional, the 11 mKg of torque pulls on your arms like few motorcycles can, and once you reach 5,000 rpm, it's an adrenalin rush, your field of vision narrows, the front end takes off with pleasure in the first 3 gears and stretches your arms to give you aches the next day
A devilish grin invades your face... you're driving a 990 SM!
Let the hypersports stay on their circuits, the next virolo they'll only see the brand of your backpack (if they have the time :p)... Rating : 5/5 Respond to Life
