In the history of two-wheeled motorcycles, Yamaha has often brought us machines capable of breaking new ground. The 500 XT, the V-Max, the 1000 GTS, the 350 RDLC, the 125 DTMX, the T-max... And that's not all. The manufacturer with the 3 tuning forks intends to thrill the market with its Niken, a three-wheeled machine that's surprising in more ways than one. Halfway between a Can-am Spyder and an MT-09, this hybrid opens a breach that will inflame both the public and detractors alike.

Machines with two wheels at the front and which take an angle have been around for a few years now. Piaggio MP3s (especially), Peugeot Metropolis, Yam Tricity - all scooters that have conquered a new market. But as I said, these are scooters. No motorcycle had ever ventured into this territory. The 900 Niken will be the investigator. Powered by the feisty 847 cm3 3-cylinder of the MT-09, 900 Tracer and XSR 900, it is especially striking for its stunning front end.
The outline was presented at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show with the MTW-9 concept. It's insane: the Niken's front end features a double fork system called Leaning Multi-Wheel. Each arm consists of an inverted fork with closely-spaced tubes to hold a 15-inch wheel and a 4-piston brake caliper. This multi-axle front end is said to reduce the effects of varying riding conditions and offer a greater sense of stability on the corner. Enough to win over all those attracted by the exhilarating thrill of riding a motorcycle, but unsettled by its natural instability. A bike with its two wheels on the same axis can't stand up on its own, and it'll fall apart when you lose the front - with an extra wheel in front, it's not really a motorcycle anymore, but it holds up in a completely different way.

The wide headstock and particularly muscular shoulders give it a menacing look to match. Michael Bay has never gone so far with his slew of Transformers. This cocktail of the MT-09 's engine and incredible chassis allows us to imagine new sensations and riding experiences. With 115 horsepower and the character of the CP3 engine, there's plenty of pace to go around. While the powertrain is taken from the MT roadster, the swingarm and tubular trellis frame are new.

Headlights, mirrors, indicators, license plate holder - the Niken is ready for imminent production. The on-board instrumentation is taken from the MT-10, with a few adjustments to the information displayed. The controls feature cruise control and various riding modes. Perhaps this intrinsic impression of width will make you fear a delicate machine... It's deceptive: the Niken is no wider than the BM R 1200 R. And barely 8 cm wider than the MT-09.

As with the R1-M, Yamaha is offering this Niken via an online reservation system. Opening May 16 at 7 p.m. at http://niken.yamaha-motor.eu.

As safety escorts at cycling races (World Tour's Tour de Romandie), we carry out our mission with endowed Niken.
This bike is incredible, being able to ride in cool mode or rally mode down a mountain pass with cyclists on their asses going over 100 km/h, and thanks to the front axle, the feeling of safety is perfect.
The engine has been somewhat modified compared to the Tracer, and is rounder, with the addition of two teeth for good acceleration despite the weight.
The only drawback is its image with other bikers, but that could change.
Even a former French rally champion is doing special stages as a duo, with excellent lap times

I'm not going to try to promote this machine. Okay, it's got three wheels, which you tend to forget very quickly, because the bike handles so well. I had to adjust the rear damping because it was too soft when delivered as a duo...a detail
Otherwise, what can I say? You have to try it out to understand how easy it is to handle. It's not a time-setter, but it's capable of sustaining a very high pace even when riding as a duo, thanks to its three-cylinder engine, which is a great compromise between engine braking and torque under acceleration. The GT position on the bike lets you eat asphalt without fear of fatigue. In short, I love this bike, and I come across far too few of them. Maybe too futuristic for bikers in 2022

Ok yes there's the look I like or I don't like. Personally, I've been a motorcyclist for 20 years, and its futuristic look and concept appealed to me. The comfort and safety aspect is undeniable compared to a conventional motorcycle. If you want safety and fun, go for it!

As already mentioned, will this model have a road variant (fairing etc.) and a belt drive? Long-distance duo riding?
I ride Rt, and this three-wheeler looks interesting. It could be a good alternative to other, bulkier three-wheelers if it offers the capabilities of a good tourer.

This bike is successful because it gives two opposite opinions:
-either it pleases
-or it displeases
Any work of art, to be accepted, must either please or displease, which gives rise to the same opinions 20 years later.
This "moto" would be talked about a century later as a major technological revolution.
Honda also has some good ideas, but because they're too risk-averse, they get left behind (like the motorcycle that balances at a standstill, which they'll never market).
Yamaha YES, the proof.

The bike is in us. It either wakes up or it doesn't. But the Nikon is surely reserved for old-timers like me. Following an operation, I've got a bum ankle. And now I can get back the feeling I had before. intriguing grasshopper, definitely worth a try.

moto sport 3 roues inclinables, yamaha tests the market, he's right.
The sporty look is undoubtedly designed to create a buzz.
A more versatile or even GT model would perhaps find its place on the market, limited today to 400 or 500 vibrating scooters and limited by their "small motorization".
An 80/90 hp model with wider tracks and a motorcycle chassis, accessible to those with a "B" license, would undoubtedly be an answer to those who envisage long-distance use.
I have serious doubts, beyond curiosity, about the niken's appeal to bikers in its current form.
I'll try it out out of curiosity, although the look and lack of versatility don't really excite me.
Yamaha's CP3 is a good idea, but the rest of the machine isn't. It needs real carrying capacity, better protection, comfort for the duo, and at least a belt drive for touring.
I'm sure it'll do just fine... but what about the rest ????

Like many others, I find this bike interesting.
But to be flawless, it would have to be equipped with a fork lock so that you don't have to put your feet on the ground, or make it easier to get into the saddle for people who aren't too tall, handicapped or elderly.
I'll take it... but only when I'm older.
