The Aprilia motorcycle range as we know it today is relatively recent. Indeed, although the brand has existed since the end of the Second World War, until the early 80s it produced only cycles, mopeds and competition bikes (Trial, Cross and Enduro).
We had to wait until 1983 to see the arrival of the first 125 road bikes (125 ST, followed by the 125 ETX trail bike in 1984) and 1985 for the first 4-stroke large-displacement bike.
As Aprilia has a green tradition, the first 4T was naturally a trail bike: the ETX 350. No problem for the chassis, as the Noale-based company's engineers are fully competent. The frame is inspired by the brand's cross-country models, with long-travel suspension and disc brakes. For the engine, Aprilia calls on Rotax. This collaboration with the engine manufacturer has lasted until today, Rotax having developed with Aprilia the 1000 cc twin-cylinder engines of the RSVs, as well as the 650 cc single-cylinder of the Pegaso.
The ETX is well born, and can stand up to comparison with the market leaders in terms of its chassis. The engine, without being surpassed, lacks a little pep compared to the more powerful Japanese models (Honda XL350R and Yamaha XT350).
All in all, the ETX is up to the task, offering good equipment and effective disc braking, especially at the rear, where many 350s still use drums.
For a first attempt, this 350 is a success. The following year, Aprilia offered a second 350 (Tuareg Rally) with a more African look, equipped from 1987 onwards with an evolution of the more powerful Rotax 350 (from which the ETX would benefit), as well as a 600cc version.
