presentation of the Side car GL 2016
Here's a unique model created for a customer who had lost the use of his legs following a motorcycle accident. The aim was not simply to take an existing model and adapt it, but to design a fully-fledged machine. The team set to work. The end result is this superb sidecar, as beautiful as it is efficient.
Still powered by the famous S&S 1647 cc square-section engine with 145 HP and 18.35 mkg of torque, it retains Avinton's signature fuel tank and top-mounted intake flaps. The overall lines are the same, but that's where the comparison with other models ends.
In fact, the frame has been completely redesigned to create a platform that can accommodate the basket and a side-by-side fork. Specially designed and tuned for this purpose, the frame is there to give the whole unit outstanding rigidity and riding behavior. The geometry has been reworked from top to bottom to achieve the best possible result.
The controls, too, have been redesigned so that they can be operated without feet. In fact, the commodos include a brake lever (acting on both front and rear brakes), a manual gearshift system, a clutch lever, and a brake control actuating an additional caliper located in the front wheel.
Let's talk about this braking system. The front wheel has two opposed calipers. The front caliper acts as the main brake (coupled to the rear brake). The front caliper acts as the main brake (coupled to the rear brake), and the front/rear balance can be adjusted to suit the desired feel. The second front caliper acts as a parking brake, but can also be operated independently of the rest by means of a lever added to the commodo. An entirely modular braking system of the finest craftsmanship, which speaks volumes about the quality of the work!
The team also reworked the gearshift system, with an electro-pneumatic control acting directly on the selector via buttons on the commodo. The result? We don't have a kind of auto gearbox, but a fully-fledged gearbox that can be operated by hand. The playful behavior and pleasure of upshifting and downshifting is fully preserved. Once again, quite a technical feat!
Two handles have been added to allow the future owner to hoist himself aboard. Once installed, the wheelchair will find its place on the luggage rack of the specially designed basket.
For manoeuvring, an ingenious reverse system has been designed: a telescopic lever which, once unfolded, rests on the ground and allows manual reversing. A simple and ingenious idea!
A model entirely designed to come as close as possible to the sensations of a classic two-wheeler. Standing next to such a machine, you can't help but admire the team's work on every level. Yes, the result is stunning, yes, the finish is top-notch, yes, this bike is exceptional. But in the end, once you've seen it for yourself, one thing becomes clear: even if this customer has lost his legs, Avinton has given him back his wheels. And that, without doubt, is the greatest victory of all!
