presentation of the 1800 R 18 Classic 2025

There is something more... lighter about the R 18 Classic. Not in terms of its weight but in terms of its bow. With this small 2025 evolution, linked to the transition to Euro5+, the front axle gains a certain finesse. This is due to the front wheel which goes from 16 to 19 inches. Besides that, the bagger is somewhat reworked, with revised engine housing covers, a reworked light signature, the arrival of a USB port, and a deeper engine. This one gains 5 Nm of torque, to total a maximum of 163 units. What a trunk!

The arrival of the R18 has not gone unnoticed. Neither has its engine. From now on, this enormous custom is taking a bigger route. And longer. Adapted for the highways, the R18 Classic version taps into the heart of the American market.
And young drivers. It may come as a surprise, but BMW has decided that the R18, whether cruiser or bagger, can be used by A2 license holders. From October 2021, it will be possible to limit it to 35 kW.

BMW' s Bagger has been around for some time, with an ersatz derived from the K 1600: the B. More streamlined, but not really in the spirit of the Road King or Chief Vintage. This time, the answer is in the segment's canons, with a big twin, a desire to go the distance and a languorous stance.

What really stands out is its large windshield. A must-have for anyone who wants to carve up the road. But, just like the competition, BM has thought of the pure riders, those eager to get the wind between their teeth. The window is removable.
The same applies to the passenger seat and saddlebags. The R18 Classic can be turned into a stripped-down cruiser at will. Solo for a while; or with the lady and her gear for a few hours or days. Luggage capacity is limited, at 15.5 liters each - the 2022 model features a modified lower saddlebag support. No further disassembly is required to ride without the panniers.
Self-confident, the bike asserts its presence with two additional headlamps.

The formula seems too simple. It's easy to present it as a new motorcycle when all you've done is add accessories. You have to look a little closer to see the special features of the Classic.
I insist on the headlight ramp, because it also supports the turn signals. The handlebars and controls are relieved and uncluttered. The R18's 'Fish' exhausts are replaced by two missile tubes almost as long as the bike itself.
The seat also gains in comfort with a thicker saddle, resulting in an increased seat height of 710 mm.

BMW R18 Classic a piece here, a change there, it all adds up. A Classic is 20 kilos heavier than an R18, i.e. 369 kilos ready to ride. An M 1000 RR would burst out laughing... except that in the clan of cruisers, baggers, tourers and weighing-killers, you assert your presence and your rank with fatty steel. In any case, the engine has so much torque that it would lift an extra quintal effortlessly.

This block is the pride of the manufacturer, of the R18 family, of the heritage of decades. With a displacement of 901 cm3... per cylinder, it's a powerplant, an identity and an expression of character all rolled into one. You've got over 15 mkg at your fingertips virtually all the time. A much greater force than the advertised horsepower. But we'll tell you anyway: 91 hp at 4,750 rpm. For more details, we've got everything you need right here ->
Another mechanical highlight is the transmission. We're delighted to see the exposed cardan shaft, a unique feature in mass-produced motorcycles.

The Big Boxer is identical on both cruiser and bagger models. The same goes for the chassis, with its classic double-cradle steel frame. The deceptively hardtail rear end adds to the look, while the R18's specs are all there: three 300 mm brake discs, 4-piston calipers at the front, a large 49 mm fully enclosed fork, a steering damper and the inevitable dose of electronic chips.

The three on-board riding modes are Rain, Roll and Rock. The latter is aptly named, with its distinctive carafon. ASC traction control is standard, as is MSR engine torque control. Cruise control is also included, but for everything else, you'll have to delve into the options.
The choice is vast: cornering lights integrated into the main headlight, hill-start assist, reverse gear system, heated grips, keyless start - and also accessories more in tune with this type of bike: double-branch selector, wide running boards, Vance & Hines exhausts, etc.

The BMW R18 Classic advances the manufacturer's position in custom territory. Targeting the travelling public, especially Americans, it stands out not for the size of its engine, but for the layout of its cylinders, for its German finish, for certain original features and for its sophisticated character. A machine that doesn't like to feel cramped.

déçu
Delighted to try it out, a beautiful machine of rare elegance. Every one of its parts could be exhibited in a museum (and that cardan shaft!)
I got on it and the wind was knocked out of me: it chafed at the slightest bend, it braked like crazy, and I was expecting a livelier engine (despite the rock mode)
In short, a barge.
Glad to have my rocket back...
