it began with a sports bike comparable to the CBR 1100 XX (sorry); it continued with the world's most powerful roadster with a surprisingly large face; and now it's confirmed with this big new GT: the new-generation K 1200 base model, with its road-facing 4-cylinder engine and unique chassis, is the impetus for a real BMW revolution. After the S and R, here's the K 1200 GT. A machine dedicated to touring that benefits from BMW's latest technology. The famous chassis with its Duolever front axle (no more telescopic forks), the new Paralever, the ESA handlebar-adjustable suspension system (optional), and its big, powerful engine. In this GT definition, the block has been downsized to 152 hp, a reduction that benefits torque and mill availability: maximum power and torque are obtained 750 and 500 rpm earlier respectively. Compared to the first K 1200 GT, the 2006 version delivers 17% more power and 11% more torque, with 3/4 of the maximum torque available from 3000 rpm. Incidentally, this is the most powerful grand touring machine on the market. This is because the K 1200 GT has to carry more luggage and offer more protection than the S. Hence the new fairing. Hence its new fairing, more massive and significantly less harmonious than theold K GT it replaces. The mechanical and chassis base is the same as the K series - it's the fairing panels, headlamp unit, integrated indicators and windscreen that have changed. Protection seems to have improved, but design-wise, the Honda 800 Pacific Coast is the closest thing to a refrigerator we've seen since.
between 2 generations, the K 1200 GT has gained range (+17%), lightness and payload (19% increase in capacity). The K 1200's standard equipment perfectly meets GT expectations: adjustable seat and handlebars, electric bubble, pannier system, brake pad wear indicator and partially integral ABS are all standard. After that, it's up to you to spice up your K 1200 GT. As BM would say:"BMW Motorrad also has a range of tailor-made options and accessories available to customers." I won't go back over its oft-mentioned general qualities, notably its great versatility.
On the other hand, its reliability isn't worthy of a Prenium bike, and BMW France doesn't deserve to be praised.
ABS box, cardan transmission, fuel pump, speedometer ... a whole host of known faults at prohibitive prices ( 1800 euros for an ABS box!!! )
At BMW, you're welcomed as if you were in a car dealership (I know that the motorcycling spirit has changed, but thank you for the atmosphere), and the prices of servicing reflect this. Bmw is good if you buy a new or used bike with a concrete warranty.
For me, BMW is finished. There are much better and less expensive alternatives.
In the series of defects the gearbox is unpleasant (close to the tractor) the long wheelbase does not facilitate agility, hard clutch control, seat adjustment not terrible .. Rating : 2/5 Respond to Detomaso

I love its noise (it's a bit sad on the RT), its torque, and its geule without the suitcases

I bought 9 months ago a k 1200 gt 2006 17000 kms, I came out of a 1200 gs, 1150 gs adventure, 1150 rt, 1100 rt and before japanese (including a super 1100 zzr) at the start very disappointed, engine, stability at high speed, stability just put the right pressure which was not the case, for the engine, the dealer simply unlocked the handle, it's night and day, it now has 30000 kms and if the seat were more comfortable it would be perfect, great engine, powerful and very torquey from 3500 rpm, extra noise when you rev it up, sufficient protection ( 1.84 m )supper eclairage meme sans le xenon et aucun soucis ( je suis tombé en panne avec les 2 rt precedente) . GT certainly, sporty certainly not or you're going to "break everything" without needing to spread yourself all over the tarmac...
Owner of a 2006 model, 39000 Kms, it's for sale. Very good deal, lots of new parts including an axle, an ABS computer, and soon (because at BM it's imperative that the part breaks) a universal joint (obvious given the state of the axle before replacement), a clutch and in my anger I'm forgetting. I think this K 1200 GT looks great. According to the 1st comments, it should give all the happiness I expect from a real GT.
The only fly in the ointment is the PRICE. How can you design a machine at this price and add a whole series of options, which are presented as almost indispensable? With this few extra options, the bill exceeds €20,000 (?). Today, I'm riding a 900 Diversion GT (a rare GT machine), which offers unbeatable value for money
But you have to change, and I'm thinking of adopting this new bike very soon

And there are at least 2 of us who are "apart", since I've been riding the R1200ST for 6 months and more than 7000km, and I'm delighted with it (with a particular fondness for Corsican roads!)
