presentation of the 500 R5 1937
From 1936 to 1937, 2,652 examples of this motorcycle were produced. Thanks to engineer Rudolf Schleicher, it features a tunnel-case engine (with no horizontal parting line), a foot-operated gearbox (doubled by a hand-operated selector) and an adjustable hydraulic fork. The "flat-twin" features tumble-valve timing, two camshafts and two valves per cylinder. With a square cross-section (bore equal to stroke) of 68 x 68mm, the engine measures 494 cm3. Two AMAL carburetors feed the beast. Valve return springs are of the pin-type.
all in all, the engine produces 24 hp at 5,500 rpm, with a fuel consumption of around 3 liters per hundred. Final drive is via a universal joint. Weighing 165 kgs, it is capable of reaching 140 km/h.
with no rear suspension, only the seat cushions the bumps in the road. It's worth noting that, since 1929/30, the German firm had been equipping its two-wheelers with pressed sheet-metal frames. This R5, on the other hand, was fitted with a tubular frame, marking the beginning of the end of pressed sheet metal frames (although they were still produced for a few years).
This motorcycle was sold for 1500 Reichsmarks, the equivalent of 10,300 euros today. In 1936, a German worker earned around 21 Reichsmarks a week.
