The presentation of the HP4 Race prototype at the 2016 EICMA show made our mouths water and our spines tense. BMW had warned that this concept would soon lead to series production. The realization of a rather surreal, phantasmagorical and unreasonable sports car. And here it is. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, a boosted engine and a sickly new chassis, the BMW HP4 Race reduces the boundary between a production motorcycle and a Superbike machine to the tiniest detail - in the image of the Ducati 1299 Superleggera or certain prepared pistardes(Aprilia RSV4-FW, etc.)

From time immemorial, technical solutions dedicated to maximum performance on the racetrack have been the hallmark of factory racing motorcycles, perfected down to the smallest detail and carefully selected. The new HP4 RACE presented by BMW is a thoroughbred racing motorcycle built in a limited edition of 750 units. Its manufacture has been entrusted to a small, highly specialized team, guaranteeing top-level quality.
In terms of mechanics, electronics and suspension components, the new HP4 RACE is on a par with the factory bikes currently lining up in Superbike, while its carbon frame is a step above. Weighing in at 171 kilograms, fully loaded and running, the new HP4 RACE is even better than the current factory bikes competing in the World Superbike Championship, and barely exceeds the weight of the official MotoGP bikes.

With the launch of the HP4 RACE, BMW has taken the liberty of mass-producing a 100-percent carbon main frame weighing just 7.8 kilograms, making this promising technology accessible to the widest possible audience.
The front and rear rims are made from the same high-tech material, which is some 30 percent lighter than forged light-alloy rims thanks to a targeted rigidity design.

The new HP4 RACE also meets the ambitions of top-level racing technology when it comes to suspension and brake components. The FGR 300 inverted fork and TTX 36 GP spring/damper combination are both supplied by Swedish supplier Öhlins, and are used in identical form in the World Superbike Championship and MotoGP. The light-alloy lower-reinforced swingarm made of milled and sheet-metal parts is another component that matches that used in the World Superbike Championship.
The braking system on the new HP4 RACE features two Brembo GP4 PR monobloc brake calipers, components that are also more typical of World Championship bikes. Titanium pistons and aluminum monobloc calipers with nickel-plated surfaces represent the best combination of materials currently available. Combined with T-Type-Racing steel brake discs, 320 mm in diameter and 6.75 mm thick, the system delivers outstanding braking performance.

The new HP4 RACE benefits from a thoroughbred racing engine matching the 6.2 and 7.2 specifications of the World Endurance and Superbike Championships. Peak power is 158 kW (215 hp) at 13,900 rpm. Maximum torque is 120 Newton-meters at 10,000 rpm. Maximum revs have been raised to 14,500 rpm, compared with 14,200 rpm for the S 1000 RR engine. Aiming for maximum performance, the bike uses a six-speed close-ratio gearbox featuring optimized gear spacing and various secondary transmissions (delivered with several sprockets and chain rings).

The new BMW HP4 RACE is equipped with a complete package of electronic control and assistance systems, plus a weight-optimized electrical dashboard developed to meet the demands of racing. The 2D instrument panel with extractable data memory and 2D data recorder) provides a wealth of information.

Acoustically perceptible, ignition cut-off-controlled Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), engine braking (EBR) and anti-wheeling protection offer a wealth of possibilities for adapting to different circuits and track conditions. They can be programmed for each gear, according to the driver's wishes, and allow the new HP4 RACE's enormous dynamic potential to be exploited to the full. Other electronic elements include Pit lane limiter, which monitors compliance with the speed limit in the pit lane, and Launch Control, which ensures perfect race starts.

The carbon fairing, airbox cover and seat cowl of the new HP4 RACE feature BMW HP Motorsport colors. A hand-brushed, clear-coated aluminum tank underlines the high-end racing look.
