presentation of the 1200 R NineT Pure 2023
Where does the NineT start? The Pure is the gateway to the range. The least expensive, the simplest, the least powerful (in France), the most amenable to customization. But that doesn't mean it's uncluttered. Especially since 2021 has brought it a welcome update.
Let's see what we can identify at a glance. A stylish plate on the airbox, different cylinder head covers, and new controls. Let's take a look at the one on the right - the new 'Mode' button will speed things up.
This is one of the new features of the entire NineT family: the riding modes. There are two, 'Rain' and 'Road'. Upgradable to a third, more dynamic 'Dyna', by dipping into the options corner.
Another point of improvement is braking. The Pro version of the ABS distributes braking force according to the inclination of the bike. A USB socket is fitted, as is a rear suspension modifier for greater progressiveness. Everyone will appreciate the remote control for preload adjustment.
But what prompted BMW to revise the entire Heritage range was not so much the need to graft more electronics onto it, as the need to take it over the years, and thus give it a pass for Euro5. The old-generation air-cooled Boxer has been redesigned accordingly. New cylinder heads optimize the gas mixture and boost power and torque curves, especially at mid-range. The maximum horsepower value drops by one, while mkgs remain unchanged... for the majority of NineTs. The French Pure is not like the others. It will be marketed in an A2 version. This means 95 horsepower instead of 109, and a little less torque. As a result, the door is open to the NineT family for young licensees.

The changes didn't wait for the new model year. 2020 had already left its mark on the Pure. BM incorporated ASC traction control as standard equipment.
The Pure's name is no accident. It aims to be pure, essential and authentic, returning to the basics of the classic roadster. Indeed, it looks it; and when compared to the more premium NineT, you can feel the difference. Not necessarily in a good way. So long inverted forks borrowed from the S 1000 RR, radial calipers, aluminum fuel tank, twin exhaust pipes and spoked wheels. These are just some of the features that differentiate the NineT from the Pure, and the latter seems to be stepping down from the top step. But if it's the spirit of this BM that interests you, you'll overlook these differences, just as you'll pay little attention to the single speedometer, the handlebar ends without aluminum weights... Design is always a delight for enthusiasts, and the Pure has kept some of its distinctive features, such as the air intake covered by an anodized aluminum cover, and the stylized plates under the seat.

That's for the garage, evenings and weekends. For day and road use, we'll be relying more on the standard 43 mm fork and Paralever rear system. The Pure's wheelbase is slightly longer than the NineT's, but its weight is lower, so its handling is very similar, if a little less sporty.
Braking is standard Béhème at this level of the range, with 3 calipers and as many discs at the end of the braided hoses. The front is fitted with two 320 mm discs bitten by 4-piston axial calipers; the rear relies on a 265 mm disc and a 2-piston caliper.
An entry-level model in BMW's Heritage clan, the R NineT Pure aims to be a simple, stripped-down roadster, using simplicity to let others' creativity take over. In short, an inspirational machine. Like the Urban G/S model, it is derived from the NineT Scrambler. And, like the first NineT, it can't lay claim to the title of favor. The Pure has been stripped of a number of chic features - and the price is correspondingly lower.
