presentation of the 650 Elefant 1985
The Elefant 650 is the second Cagiva model to be equipped with the L-twin engine from Ducati, acquired by the Castiglione brothers in 1983. As with theAlazzurra, the engine chosen is the Pantah 650.
Right from the design stage, Cagiva's commitment to competition was clearly stated. The Cagiva group had big ambitions, and the opportunity to compete on one of the Japanese brands' - and BMW's - favourite grounds was too good to resist.
By using the 650cc version of the Pantah engine, the Italian brand is positioning itself very well in the market. It competes with the big 600cc single-cylinder bikes of the time, and remains competitive with Honda, which offers a huge XLV750 at the top end of the range, and with BMW's R80GS. What's more, from a competition standpoint, this engine base has a good capacity for evolution (the Elefant entered in the rally will be pumped up to 750cc and develop a whopping 73 hp).
The styling is very restrained, the Italian simply copying the aesthetics of the Japanese 600, but although equipped with a large twin-cylinder, the lines lack the heaviness of the Honda XLV.

The rally version made an immediate impact. As early as 1985, when the production model was released, the Elefant was entered in the Dakar Rally with the Ligier-Cagiva team and drivers Hubert Auriol and Gilles Picart. For the first participation of this Ducati-powered Cagiva, Auriol finished 8th and Picard 13th.
This 650 Elefant won't be the pachyderm most remembered. It was, however, the first in a long line of big trailers with an impressive track record. It bowed out in 1987, to be replaced by an all-new, more modern 750, this time accompanied by a 350cc little sister. The first 900 arrived in 1990.
