presentation of the Origin 2025
For many people, Can-Am is a machine with 2 wheels in front and an intriguing face. Its Spyders and Rykers have found a clientele curious about new experiences, with these machines halfway between motorcycle, trike and car.
But Can-Am is also the story behind the bike. It all began in 1972, when Bombardier wanted to diversify into the world of two-wheelers, and immediately turned its attention to off-roading.
The cross-country MX1 (as it's really called) and trail-style TNT arrived in 1973, in 125 and 175 cm3 versions with Rotax engines. Can-Am was soon competing in ISDT events, and reaching the podium. The brand continued to perform well throughout the '70s, before entrusting its destiny to the British company Armstrong / CCM in the '80s. In 1987, the Can-Am motorcycle adventure came to an end, while Bombardier continued to expand.
All this to say that the Canadian brand is no stranger to the field. Now it's back with electric models. The Pulse, an urban roadster, and the Origin trail, also designed for the city, but also for the suburbs and off-road trails. Both serious and a tad mischievous, it would not look out of place in a German or Scandinavian catalog. With its choice of colors and angular features, runes in the headlights and cold-rock profile, the Can-Am Origin is almost reminiscent of a Husqvarna millstone.
For this revival, the conquest will be by way of electric power. The Rotax E-Power powertrain will deliver the wattage equivalent of a small-displacement engine. It delivers 27 hp continuously and up to 47 hp at peak. Torque offers more interesting values, with 72 Nm all the time. These 7.4 mkg, the equivalent of a good 7.5, are available from 0 to 4,600 rpm. Enough to deliver invigorating acceleration at all times. In fact, the Origin takes just 4.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.
However, even if the system can recover energy on deceleration, don't expect a crazy range (as with all electric bikes). In the best-case scenario, the 8.9 kWh battery will provide up to 145 km. Maintain a dynamic driving style or a few excusions in the poo, and the range will melt away at high speed.
Recharging time for the battery is a good argument: from 20% to 80% in just 50 minutes, thanks to the motor-liquid cooling-charger-inverter combination. Eat an episode of House of the Dragon and you're back in business for 100 km. But the brand does not specify the time required for a full charge. Logically, the delay is likely to be a lot less pleasant - in a technical doc we saw a little over 5 hrs.

Origin supplies some very interesting peripherals, such as a monobracket in which the drive chain runs. Permanently lubricated and protected from dirt, it should last as long as the battery. The shock absorber that joins the frame is adjustable in all directions.
The front fork has an impressive 255 mm of travel (same as the shock absorber), halfway between a classic trail bike and a pure enduro machine. Consider that the front end of an Africa Twin has 230 mm of travel. With a ground clearance of 274 mm, spoked rims and studded tires, the Origin will laugh at curbs, potholes and small trail crevices.
Suspension is supplied by Kayaba. Braking is supplied by J.Juan. A single but large (320 mm) front disc, clamped by a 2-piston caliper. The rear features a 240 mm single-piston disc. Apparently sufficient but not formidable, the efficiency of this equipment is enhanced by the engine's regenerative restraint.
Welcome aboard the Origin and you'll immediately be swept away in a techno atmosphere. The instrumentation features a huge 10.25-inch color TFT screen with Apple CarPlay and Bluetooth connection. Similar in size to the BMW K 1600. The display also features 6 driving modes (Normal - Eco - Sport - Rain - Off-Road - Off-Road+), each influencing throttle response, traction control and ABS in its own way. A reverse gear is also included. The controls are backlit, and the rider has a glovebox with USB port in front of him - all very handy for a Smartphone.
Can-Am puts its wheels back into the motorcycle sector with a versatile, serious machine. There's no denying that the Origin wants to make a splash, but its price will be more of a handicap than anything else. This is true of all electron-powered vehicles. This trail starts at well over 17,000 bales, or even close to 20,000 if you opt for the '73 version, better equipped with windscreen, LED signature and exclusive decoration. This tribute version is not available in 11 kW for the 125 equivalent, unlike the basic Origin, which can be driven by A1 holders.

Maintenance
The inhalation valve may not be watertight, allowing moisture or water to enter the high-voltage battery. This can lead to a loss of vehicle power and increase the risk of an accident. It can also cause the battery to catch fire over time, even when the vehicle is not in motion.
