944 ST2 1997 test drive

Ducati 944 ST2 1997 test drive it's sunny, it's hot, everyone's at work, except my apple... who's got his butt on a Ducati 944 ST2. Eye shock: this Ducati has a surprisingly soft design from the Italian manufacturer; inspired by the sport-GT philosophy, the design is sober, light, but pleasant to look at... pleasant, quite simply. But the essential shock on an ST is the driving position: very comfortable compared to the rest of Italian production. You'd almost think you were on a Japanese sport-GT, but with a firm seat and a certain amount of pressure on the front that only becomes noticeable after a few... muscular kilometers on mountain roads! Very slender in the legs, the machine can be squeezed in an embrace that's essential because Ducatis need a special kind of riding, where the rider must be at one with the machine (see the900 SS test ). The twin with 2 valves per cylinder emits the usual Desmo symphony: a husky, cavernous sound, but surprisingly discreet (sport-GT philosophy). Vibrations are present but pleasant. Just like Ducati! Let's get out of town. It's a bit of an ordeal, as a twin is by definition not very supple at very low revs, especially an Italian with character; what's more, the turning radius isn't very formidable (long live the lessons of the plateau). Fortunately, the road to Currienne is just around the corner, and that's going to wake the beast up. BBRROOAAA...!!!! The twin is particularly torquey and gives you a good kick in the ass every time you change gear. The gearbox is excellent and the suspension filters the road quite well, as long as it's not too rotten! The mill just doesn't want to be pushed to the top of the rev counter... you need a desmoquattro to get the horsepower to the top, and that means an ST4. The chassis is as rigid as you could wish for, and the machine feels like it's on a rail once you've entered the bend. Braking is effective, less so than on a hyper-sport, but more than adequate for the beast's performance. Even if the control lacks a little smoothness, it provides a very good feel and dosage of the front brake. Forget the rear; on a twin, it's rarely used. As you go around corners, the machine's stability gives you confidence, and its readiness to place itself wherever you look is a real pleasure. This chassis is a delight! Once on the freeway, the protection offered allows you to maintain a respectable cruising speed (over 160 km/h), but the lack of power becomes noticeable above 200 km/h and the machine becomes lazy... but those who buy an ST2 are not looking for the performance of a Hayabusa or a Blackbird. Is the ST2 a good machine? Certainly; it offers the character of Italy with a certain idea of tourism... it doesn't follow in the footsteps of the VFR because, although it's positioned in a similar niche, it has a much lower price and much less power, but an unrivalled character.

La meilleure des motos que j'ai possédées depuis 20 ans
French Slow Philou Model 1997
Riding a Yam 600 Fazer in 2000, I set out on the hunt for the bike that would replace it, trying out everything the dealers had to offer. As my tastes became more refined, I leaned more and more towards a sporty tourer, or road bike with a fairing, and thought I'd found THE bike when I tried a Honda VFR 800. Until I tested a Triumph Sprint 955, whose curves dressed in "British racing green" seemed to me very distinguished and the 3-cylinder engine enchanting, so I wanted one. But shortly afterwards, the Ducati ST2 was on trial at all Ducati dealerships (few in fact), and as I'd read a particularly glowing article on the Internet by an owner who'd switched from a VFR 800 to the ST2, curiosity prompted me to go and try it out
I was stunned by this first test ride, to find such sure handling, an engine that pulls so hard between 4000 and 6000 (it was that big torque so pleasant for a long-distance traveler), the pleasure of swallowing corners like never before
Just to be sure I hadn't had a momentary halucination, I repeated the test with an ST2 a week later at a second dealership, then a third again, this time as a duo. No more doubts: the more I rode the ST2, the more certain I became that this bike would one day be mine
And so it was, at the end of 2002, with the purchase of a beautiful new red ST2, complete with its elegant and practical Nonfango traveller's cases. In just over 2 years, with a fuel consumption of 6 liters / 100 km, I put 55,000 km on it without the slightest hitch
None of my motorcycles before or since has given me as much satisfaction as the Ducati ST2, whose only real shortcoming was an extremely poorly-designed fairing that had to be dismantled and, above all, reassembled without a crisis of nerves to maintain the beast.

Superb bike, it's my favorite of the few I own (Tomcat/ 100 cbr/ 1100 gex)
It's a joy to ride, with an assertive character, I've rediscovered the pleasures of the 500 xt on the engine braking side, great road holding, the characteristic engine noise where everyone thinks the connecting rods are cast at idle, not greedy for fuel, and what's more, with 4 cones instead of the air filter, it runs on 80% ethanol without adjustment and without over-consumption! A full tank at 20€ for 300 kilometers, what do you think? Chain kit soon 25000 still in good condition (I only use the clutch when starting, otherwise the rest on the fly), the front tire significantly less, rear 12000
I have a st4 to reassemble but I'm taking my time because the st2 is so cool.

Avis sur la Ducati 944 ST2
French jojo76 Model 2001
I'm here to confirm all the previous opinions, a very lively bike, but not a Ville because it's not at all supple at low revs, but as soon as you get into the revs it knows how to make its owner happy. Good roadholding, very vigorous braking at the front, more progressive at the rear. I've got 40,000 km on the odometer, with no major worries apart from the relatively expensive maintenance at a Ducati dealership. Otherwise, for a bike of its age in 2001, it gives me nothing but pleasure. It's a motorcycle
i don't regret buying it at all, and for a price that's still affordable.

Troisième ST2
French ST33 Model 2003
After 100,000 km in a Ducati 907 I.E, I switched to its replacement.
A new 1997 ST2, first model, a few odds and ends taken under warranty. After 40,000 km, no more problems until 187,000, alternator burnt out. I sell it as spare parts.
The defects of the first models were corrected from 2000 onwards. Changed for a 2003 with 15,000 km, no problems, 186,000 km today (except water pump seal at 176,000). Currently for sale
I'm continuing with a 2003 model sold in 2005, bought at 48,000 km, 75,000 km to date. A bit of an overhaul to do, as it was mistreated by the previous owners
I've criss-crossed the length and breadth of Europe (as a duo, then solo now, and I can't get enough of this bike). I do all the maintenance myself.

French Fanou Model 2003
I've owned a 2002 St2 since April 2016, and have clocked up just over 20,000 kms on it (it has 71,000 kms to date), having bought it from a friend (a first hand purchase)
even if it's not very powerful, the engine is very endearing, full of character, and that sound!!! very maneuverable, excellent roadholding, which is more very comfortable to cut the road, 900 kms in one day at its handlebars have not caused me any problems or pain
The only problem, which never left me on the side of the road, was a leaking water pump shaft seal (the water was leaking into the oil sump), which was repaired by a mechanic friend of mine, because the network was not very extensive and the prices were quite high. I try to do the maintenance myself, otherwise
I'm not a sectarian, I've got a Honda CB 1000 Big One in parallel, a bike that's diametrically opposed, you can feel that the Ducat lives, rumbles, vibrates, another motorcycle philosophy, both suit me

Bjr,
i just bought a 2001 model with 38000 kms. i did the overhaul myself (except injection but it's coming). with a bit of information, the maintenance can be done very well by soignaux (total cost of this big overhaul:150 euros)
driving sensations: great engine, comfort (especially coming off a sv 650), protection, fuel consumption
roadholding:a little confusing at first, but you soon get used to it
drawback: it doesn't like the city: you have to play with the clutch all the time, and it heats up very quickly
in short, a Ducati that's easy to live with on a daily basis

Hello everyone,
i can confirm that resale is very difficult..
Fastidious maintenance (clutch, hydraulic receiver seal, altener burnout, engine mounting bolt out of order...) apart from that, there are some who find it reliable..
Other than that, it feels great... well, when it works
I'm going to buy another TDM

I've had a st2 since december 2003
Nothing to say, 12500km of happiness
Small downside, the dealerships in Rp who make their money on MO time
Found an off-grid garage that will now take care of my beauty

Lots of mechanical problems (99 model, I hear the newer models are better???). I miss a bit the serenity of a Japanese with which you could ride without wondering if you were going to get on the bike or on the tow truck. Good engine. Rating : 5/5

I bought it two months ago and I'm very happy with it. I feel a bit out of my league with this type of bike, I have to say that when I was a kid there was a desmo down the street from me and it's true that the noise... Rating : 5/5

I've had my ST2 for 2 months. I was riding a TDM 900. Apart from my digital screen which took water...no problem...the repair is taken care of by DUCATI. I've always dreamed of becoming a Ducati rider, and now I'm wondering how I'm going to get to sit on a Japanese bike again. The sensations are unique, the sound of my DUCATI PERFORMANCE is bewitching, and the bike is diabolically precise. I bought the bike with MICHELIN PILOT ROAD tires...I'll be fitting METZELER Z6s, which are more playful and irreproachable when the going gets rough. My ST2 is fitted with a DUCATI high bubble...perfect! In short, I'm crazy about this bike, and I'll only trade it in for an ST4 S! Rating : 5/5
I have a 2001 model bought in February 2004 with 18,000km. Fortunately, it was under warranty, as the rear amorto started leaking until it ran out of fuel. Another problem at the moment is temporary loss of power (fuel filter, spark plugs, etc.). In spite of everything, I don't regret my purchase, as it's a pleasure beast if you're not obsessed by the ultimate km/h. It just needs more attention than my previous Japanese models to keep it in tip-top shape. Hi Rating : 5/5

WITHOUT WANTING TO OPEN A FORUM HERE, THIS KIND OF DETAIL IS VERY INTERESTING, EVEN ESSENTIAL WHEN THE DAY OF RESALE ARRIVES... THE BLIND MAGIC OF DUCATI SOMETIMES FASCINATES HIM... Rating : 5/5
