presentation of the 916 MONSTER S4 2003
With its 916 heart, the Monster has finally found an engine worthy of its name. The Ducati's timeless plastic looks are enhanced by the aggressiveness of its magnificent red rims, borrowed from the 916. The chassis is that of the ST4, to bring more rigor to the roadster's much racier handling. Sprinkled with carbon elements, the S4 is bestial. The frame seems almost timid in the face of the big 4 valves per cylinder engine. Visually, the Ducat' sets the tone: it's going to be sporty.
No need to expect the suppleness of a Japanese. it'll pound away under 3,000 rpm, but it'll be big after that. Its most expressive zone: between 3 and 6,000. At these revs, the slightest twist of the throttle unleashes a thunderbolt. Mama mia - what power! With its 101 hp, the S4 would make the 900 look like a gentle little muse. With a deep breath of air, copious torque, particularly alert revving and surprisingly long reach, this Monster has what it takes to make other roadsters tremble. With no need for gentleness or tenderness, the bike insists on being looked after. No cuddling, just a firm grip. You'll need it to manipulate the clutch lever, which is as firm as the saddle that won't spare your buttocks. Don't expect any help from the suspension. The stiffness of the cushioning is matched by the rigidity of the chassis. It longs to be ridden... hold it firmly, attack and enjoy its particularly sporty behavior. This machine's agility isn't very instinctive, and you'll need to make more effort than with the 900 to change angles quickly. Logical: with more weight and a wider spine angle, this beast is more physical to ride. It's better to stay on good asphalt - The generous S4 will reward you with intoxicating sensations
Braking is a model of its kind, with bite and bluffing power.
OK, comfort is the least of its priorities, it steers like an aircraft carrier, there's no such thing as smoothness (engine or suspension) and deep down, it's a real bitch. A simple kiss and you'll succumb instantly. And when her heart races, the shiver that runs down your spine will take you into pure, uncompromising ecstasy.

a bike that needs to be looked after and pampered, as maintenance is costly, but it's a real pleasure to ride Rating : 5/5 Respond to geraldr6
An extra torque motor/frame, pleasure and only pleasure. But it's a maintenance job that requires you to dip your hands into the toolbox and swap your favorite reading for the bike's technical review, unless you can afford it. Having said that, I'm still convinced that knowing your machine mechanically is an undeniable plus for getting the most out of it
I signed up for it, and I'd do it again, knowing what I was getting into. Rating : 5/5 Respond to jamon
