presentation of the 998 R 2002

born the 916, then became the 996, the Superbike underwent an impressive engine evolution with its R version. The famous Testastretta cylinder head was introduced. It gave birth to the 998, which in turn became the 998 R. Visually, the bike remains virtually unchanged. Only the (carbon) fairing is stripped of most of its gills, a style begun with the 996 R. On this machine, carbon is omnipresent, the suspension is adjustable in all directions and signed Öhlins, the wheels are magnesium, and the Brembo brakes are 4 pistons and 4 pads per caliper.
As you'd expect, the best is inside. The 998 cm3 twin boasts super-square dimensions and is topped by the "narrow head" cylinder head inaugurated on the 996 R. The result: 139 hp in free-running form. Ducat' pampers its lucky owners with a carbon exhaust system, and the little electronic box that goes with it. All of which adds quite a few watts to the Italian twin.
A machine like this can only be truly appreciated on the track. Power lives in the bike. The spark plug really kicks in from 6,000 rpm, and pulls with surprising vigor all the way to the red zone... where the ignition cuts out quickly. Make sure you don't get caught out, or you'll lose a lot of tenths.

A true Superbike with a minimum of road hardware, the machine is very rigid, very physical, and will demand the very best of you. The set-up of the chassis must be impeccable and the rider authoritative. He has to work constantly, taking it vigorously through curves and sequences. Once you've mastered it, the 998 R is a pure joy to ride. Your eyes and hands could then resemble those of Fogarty. The icing on the cake is the stunning braking. Without doubt one of the best in current production. The unreal price tag reflects the dream conveyed by this exceptional motorcycle.

A legend on the road...it's magnificent, no one can argue with that...it's a bit expensive too, with a few minor reliability problems, and only has 2 cylinders (which doesn't displease the pre-retirement bikers, whom I salute in passing)...but a work of art is still a work of art...thank you Italy! Rating : 5/5
