presentation of the 821 Monster 2015
The mid-size Monster has been part of the family for a long time; 1996 to be precise, when it first appeared as a 750. Generations have followed one another, displaying its evolutions through the eternal desmo. From 750, it became 800, then 800 S2R, 796 yesterday and 821 today. Each generation has retained its genetic heritage (desmodromic valve timing, air cooling, 2 valves per cylinder, steel trellis frame) while adding a handful of horsepower. All this changes, exults, upsets and challenges the history of this machine. The 821 Monster is born with fire, style, silicon and 29% more power.
25 horsepower. From 796 to 821, the middle Monster gained 25 horsepower. In one offspring, its power has increased as much as in the previous 4 generations. Yes, the first 750 churned out 62 horsepower; the 796 carried the air desmodromic banner on a virtuous 87 units. It's the perfect compromise between the ease of the little Monster and the fieriness of the big one. Just think: with 112 hp, it's as powerful as the S4R with its 996 engine. That's a lot of power! The secret? This latest instalment in the saga uses the latest Hypermotard twin. This liquid-cooled, 4-valve-per-cylinder Testastretta 11° delivers 2 more horsepower and the same 9.1 mkg of torque. Full of character and fire on the HM, this very modern block promises intoxication and sensations.
visually, some may regret that this boiler and all the baggage that goes with it (hoses, radiator, etc.) weigh down the 821 Monster's belly. Others will appreciate the more muscular, "watt-ball" feel, with an emotional signature that's palpable right down to the connecting rods. Particularly close to the 1200 Monster, both in design and technology, the 821, like its big brother, has rid itself of outdated effects. Gone are the mouths piercing the tank, the pots under the seat and the bezels on the headlight... and the single-arm. That's not so easy to digest. Like the 899 / 1299 Panigale pairing, Ducati seems intent on reserving the premium shape of the swingarm for its most exclusive (and most expensive) versions. Whether it's a pity or a pity, Ducati should have kept this touch of elegance. As for the rest, it's pure Bologna: desirable, sporty, inimitable, charming and charismatic. An Italian, ready to shake your adrenal glands.

The 821 Monster wants to give you your money's worth, and your thirst for technology. For starters, its minimalist frame is impossible to resist. As on the 1200, the tubular steel trellis structure has been reduced to the sole function of holding the steering column. The whole bike is held together by the twin. To ensure first-rate handling, the Italian roadster is equipped with an inverted fork, Brembo radial brake calipers and Praetorian electronics.between the handlebars and the rear wheel: 8-level traction control, 3 levels of ABS and 3 riding modes, all controlled from the handlebars.
still light, weighing in at just under 180 kilos, the 821 Monster still takes on some ten kilos in its liquid-multi-valve evolution. Given the increased power, pulling on the arms won't be a problem. Vigorous yet welcoming, the machine is devoted to the rider's posterior, with a height-adjustable seat.
The 821 Monster will also be available in a 35 Kw version for A2 license holders, and in Dark color for a handful of euros less.

Bikers' reviews Leave a review - 8 reviews
Yes, it's got torque. Yes, the sound is just magical for an original line. And it's got a full character and it's nice
But, in real life, it heats up to the point of baking your calves. It's not very maneuverable (relatively heavy for a roadster, at least you can feel its weight) and the riding position (1.77m) plus the fork (though in Stripe version) and braking give a bad feedback, not always pleasant.
On the freeway, it's a real pain in the ass (well, that's no surprise, but the windscreen doesn't make much difference) and the noise ends up being irritating. On the plus side, it doesn't vibrate at all.
On small roads, it's a total blast. It's a real joy to ride. It's not on a rail like a BMW (I've ridden an F800 before, for comparison), but it holds its course well and rarely loses the front end, so it's clean. Once again, the riding position can spoil things a bit: the position of the footrests means that the back of the shoe rests on the arm. It's a question of whether you're looking for the front or not. For me, it made my back ache on long distances (over 300km), but below that, it's just kif
All in all, it's a great bike, with its faults, but they're not prohibitive. It's just that the use/price ratio isn't superbly balanced. A Triumph Triple (for example) 2000€ cheaper would give you just as much pleasure, and in everyday use is far more enjoyable. After all, when you like it, you don't count and it's not a bad choice, far from it. Rating : 4/5 Respond to vroum vroum
THE REAL COMPROMISE!
Too much ball this machine, playful, perfect handling, great comfort and devastating engine ! The 112hp are neither ponies nor percherons, but pure racing blood !
In short, it's the motorcycle of all pleasures!
Yes, the rear footrests are a little too far forward, yes, the rear brake is useless, yes, the single-arm is nicer, but frankly, everything else is so top-notch, so I passed... Besides, the rear brake is for kids...
Bonne route à tous ! Rating : 5/5 Respond to arcachax
And the M 821 truly lived up to my expectations! The very natural riding position allows you to attack as well as cruise... The electronic assistance package (in the form of maps) is really powerful and easily adjustable
The sound of the exhaust (original!) is superb, especially when the valves start to open...
The only (minor) drawback is the position of the passenger footrest plates, which, when the toe is put down, come to rest on the heel... But I find that getting used to it quickly eliminates the problem
To sum up, this is a very good, very beautiful bike which, icing on the cake, offers real versatility and is equally at home on the attack or in a diva pose on a café terrace, and which even hints at the possibility of fairly long journeys on board... (A change from my 696, too!) Rating : 5/5 Respond to Bolognaise
So, yes, it's less characterful than the 796, but what a push. I also find it easier to take around corners
I don't regret the change at all. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Aurelien
The qualities:
- excellent (really excellent) chassis, excellent tires, very good handling,
- round, torquey engine at 4,000-5,000 revs, really responsive at 7,000,
- great sound (it's noisy, but I like it),
- driving position slightly on the wrists, so a little sporty, but very comfortable for everyday use,
- completely duo-compatible (my wife is delighted, it's a change from my 2003 tuono!),
- electronic assistance (ABS and traction control) and cartography largely configurable. Safe and very discreet in use,
- and above all, it confirms what I felt on the test ride: true twin behavior. I do a lot of city driving and urban freeways, and it's really fun at 40 km/h.
The criticisms I would temper:
- rear footrests too far forward, yes, but you really have to be in a forward position to be bothered (I'm 1m77 and it's no problem)
- no single-arm, yes, and that's a shame, but otherwise pretty well finished
Criticisms to remember:
- the fork is indeed soft, which is annoying when you attack (but you don't feel it on a daily basis)
- it's probably less temperamental than older models, but I lack points of comparison (in any case, it's infinitely easier to ride than my good old tuono)
- it's still a mid-size and not a 1000: even if it's a twin, you need to rev it up to attack seriously
- price: more expensive than competitors (like MT09), but when you buy Italian, you know what you're getting...
All in all, no regrets about the purchase.

- Excessive heating in town, the calf is nice and warm, and I don't even want to tell you when the fans come on...! And I tried it in November! See you in August in the middle of summer!
- the position of the feet, you're always touching the passenger's!
- and finally, for me, too many decibels, even at idle.
I won't be buying it. Rating : 1/5 Respond to Paulo
Too many decibels? You must be the only one to complain... The sound is incredible in the original line.
As for the excessive heat, I tried it 2 times in September, and was in no way annoyed. A motorcycle heats up as a matter of course.... Rating : 4/5 Participate in the conversation
