presentation of the SCRAMBLER 400 Sixty2 2018
Expensive but fun, Ducati's little Scrambler was a joy to ride during our test ride. With the same silhouette and good humor as the big one, the fun machine as a modasse must nevertheless find its place in this more typical low-cost segment. From the outset, it seemed like a good, even excellent idea to offer a 400 cm3 version of the Scrambler. For some people, an 800 may seem a little too large a displacement to discover the world of motorcycling. The idea of having fun with a medium-capacity Ducat is very appealing. Especially since the Scrambler already has a strong appeal and an excellent reputation. So if we could have a"little Scrambler" to ride around on, for less money and with the same look, we'd be more than tempted. But - and we'll come back to this at the end - the price doesn't tend towards this philosophy.
there's no point in going on and on about the design of this beach bike. It's a real delicacy that smells of vacations, beaches and surfboards. So, let's take a look at what's new on this 399 cm3 model. The displacement, of course, with stroke and bore reduced. But the essential remains: an air-cooled twin desmo. In the process, the engine loses almost half its power but retains 41 hp and 3.9 mkg. As a result, you can forget about playful winding and concentrate on simple cruising, accessible only to A2 license holders.
to make it more affordable, Ducati has also reduced the quality of its peripherals. The inverted fork has been replaced by a conventional 41 mm model with no adjustment. The 4-piston radial caliper has been replaced by a 2-piston axial one. The aluminum plates have been removed from the fuel tank, which is slightly larger in capacity. The swingarm is made of steel. The round mirrors are more basic. The rear wheel is narrower, with a 160 tire instead of the 180 of other Scramblers in the range. However, ABS is still standard, as is the headlamp with its specific charm and LED crown, the trellis frame, the copy-and-paste design of the 800 and the Ducati logo.
By the way, why this Sixty2 appendage on the 400? To recall the year 1962, when the brand's first Scrambler went on sale.
the 400 Scrambler suffers from cost-cutting. This was to be expected, as the machine and its"younger" colors were intended to be more accessible to the younger generation. However, the price is simply outrageous. It costs only 600 euros less than theIcon, which is much better equipped and motorized. Even though it's a real eye-catcher, it's still a lot of money, especially when you're offering the same services in the same spirit as a Mash 400 at 40% less.
