presentation of the 998 S Bayliss Replica 2002

it's an alliance that has made Ducati red shine twice over in world SBK. In the hands of Australian Troy Bayliss, the Testastretta twin helped Ducati win the manufacturer's and rider's world titles in 2001.

to thank this charismatic rider (of whom we'll certainly be hearing a lot more), Ducati presented a limited edition of the 998 S, a Bayliss Replica in the colors of the F01 he rode in WSBK. Reservations began on December 17, 2001 - 300 examples were planned, which could only be ordered via the Internet. But in response to demand, the Bolognese brand increased the number to 500. A special feature: each tank was signed by Bayliss himself. Each bike also came with an engraved number plate and a certificate of authenticity.

with this decoration, the 998 S looks as if it has just stepped out of a Laguna Seca round. Superb in its INFOSTRADA livery, the diva sports the coats-of-arms of its sponsors on its multiple facets (Playstation, Shell, Michelin, Motorola, etc.), ending with 2 Termignoni tips. The 136 desmoquattro grunts get a nice voice.
As an S, the 998 not only gets a more powerful boiler (+13 hp), but also a top-of-the-range suspension package: Öhlins everywhere, for the rear shock absorber, the steering damper, and as it's a Bayliss, the 43 mm inverted fork also comes from the Swedish manufacturer (Showa on the standard S).

the Bayliss replica was also equipped with features that would interest many a tracker: a braking system with P4-34 calipers (four 34-mm diameter, 4 pistons) and 4 brake pads per caliper, a 15 mm master cylinder, new 4.5 mm thick discs, and an adjustable column angle.

anecdote: the models sold in North America were equipped with the standard 998 engine, developing 123 hp. To compensate, the bodywork was made of carbon fiber, as on the 996 R.
