presentation of the 1870 Road Glide 3 FLTRT 2024
the Harley trike range offers two main destinations: a certain simplicity with the Freewheeler, or a luxurious Tourer trend with the Tri Glide Ultra. But in lands beyond the borders of the old continent, a third cadence exists, exactly halfway between the two aforementioned models. It's called Road Glide 3.
Its name reveals an extension of Touring. This trike is typically a 3-wheel Road Glide. Its Sharnose fork head presents this unapologetically posturing identity. This big face provides welcome superior protection for tourers, and unlike the Tri Glide, it's not mounted on the steering column but on the frame - the same subtle difference as on cousins in the Grand Touring branch. Another advantage of a large cockpit is that there's room for several dials and a large TFT screen for infotainment with the Boom Box GTS system.
The Road Glide dresses its hips with suitcases; the Road Glide 3 prefers wheels. This doesn't prevent the trike from carrying a selection of luggage. Its wide, generous stern houses a 60-liter trunk.
Far less loaded than the Tri Glide Ultra, the machine's sleek rear end has a hot rod feel, and the size of its basin seems to draw its strength from to send its big front end out onto wide, endless roads.
But in true Harley-Davidson fashion, the sturdiness, the song, the mechanical passion spreads with its paunchy V-twin, the Milwaukee Eight. Its first name, 114, overlooks 1868 cm3 of metal, gasoline and fat. It breathes through 4 valves per cylinder. Some 91 hp at 4,750 rpm are there to carry the imposing machine along, but what's most appreciable is the huge torque of 16.5 mkg, reached at just 2,750 rpm. Weight is the only thing to dampen the temperament of this charismatic powerplant. With 528 kg to carry, you're bound to be less generous than a similarly powered Road Glide (it's 140 kg lighter). But that's not why you choose a trike. You want it for its inimitable, unspoken pleasure.
Over time, Harleys have become highly technological. Too much for some, unwilling to appreciate the invasiveness and decision-making power of electronic chips. Others welcome the sense of safety infused by the on-board system. The Road Glide 3 holds the road by its wheels, and calms itself with ABS, interconnected braking and traction control - all responsive in corners. But what's the point with a machine that can't take corners?
Also on board are tire pressure monitoring, a residual torque engine management system and a reverse gear.

An upgraded Freewheeler for long distances... The charm of a Harley with the stability of three wheels... A way to discover new sensations, or rediscover them. The Road Glide 3 has it all, and is the perfect addition to the family. But the bugger is selective. It is marketed in many countries, but not in Europe, Latin America or China. A pig's temperament? More a question of homologation.
