presentation of the 1450 ROAD KING FLHR 2005

By Olivier Quinten - Motoplanete exclusive

Who hasn't wandered through the day with the same refrain in their head? A song heard distractedly on the radio, a text read on an advertising poster, or inspired by a detail ...

During the first few kilometers on this Harley, it's not the song sung by Brigitte Bardot that lulls me to sleep, but rather the theme tune from the 70s motorcycle soap opera "CHIPS"!

The original

Don't look now, our friends Ponch and Baker don't ride a Road King, but rather a Japanese inline-four (the last straw for an American soap opera!), so it's more the double-spoke gear selector that reminds me of the credits ...

Harley-Davidson 1450 ROAD KING FLHR 2005 - 1Harley-Davidson 1450 ROAD KING FLHR 2005 - 1

Harley-Davidson 1450 ROAD KING FLHR 2005Although I'm not a great connoisseur of Milwaukee customs, I had reviewed my notes (apprehensions) written when the new line of V-roads with their very "energetic" engine came out. But now I'm chattering my teeth at red lights, thanks to the muted but ever-present vibrations of the big 1450 cm³ V2.
This Road King has all the "police" elements: windscreen, big plate, footrests, dual-branch shifter and, of course, the famous deceptively soft cases for stowing bic, ticket book and other handcuffs. Why deceptively soft? They look like leather saddlebags, but they're actually quite practical rigid cases with a good capacity.
Other advantages not to be overlooked are the various reinforcements to prevent the saddle from lying flat, and the cruise control, a detail that reveals the road-going ambitions of "La reine de la route".
And yes, Harley is in the midst of its "Back to the future" period: after fuel injection, a 6-speed gearbox and an alarm box that lets you start without using a key, it's now equipped with cruise control!
Very practical, especially as the 10.9 mkg of torque at a blistering 3,400 rpm allows you to "pop" the 6 from 90 km/h and then switch to cruise.

The only historical detail is the whitewall tires.

But what does all this equipment have to offer in motion?

Once you've cracked the starter (you need power to fire up 2 x 725 cc cylinders!), you'll need to put your back into it to get the stand up. What's more, the stand isn't particularly stable or easy to deploy, as it's well hidden under the bike.Harley-Davidson 1450 ROAD KING FLHR 2005

On the other hand, the 280 kg of torque makes for a smooth start, and the bike's stability is such that I've had fun several times treading on the fire without putting my foot down! Speaking of fire, the bike cooks your legs when you're standing still, to the point where I felt like my jeans were about to burst into flames!

OK, a Harley is made for riding, and it's just as true that the very cool but not too custom position makes you want to cruise endlessly. All the more so since the fuel tank capacity, reasonable fuel consumption and good-sized windscreen (rear windshield from 130 km/h) make it possible to cover distances of over 220 km.
Small-road rides are punctuated by the clunk of the gearbox and the crunch of the kickstand on asphalt.

Conclusion:

Why the original?
Well, because I personally feel that the Road King is the real "Custom": a devilishly beautiful, imposing yet rideable machine, a concept often overlooked by choppers.

During the week I spent with this Harley, I found myself bumping into the cars behind me several times, comfortably seated in my luxurious leather armchair, gearbox in sixth gear and going 90 kph.
And that's something we can only applaud: this bike encourages cool riding.
Encourages? Well, no, obliges! Because the brakes, unfortunately, remain in the custom tradition and are rather good retarders. After complaining about the untamed power of the brakes on the Ducati Hypermotard (tested the same week as this Harley), I broke out in a cold sweat when I picked up the beast and performed my first braking maneuver!
Obviously, Harley's style of customer doesn't call for good braking, but for good riding that allows for motorized show-offs... And here, the contract is well fulfilled! all the more so as this Harley allows you to travel alone or, above all, in pairs, while still being civilized company for everyday riding.
Out of decency for my banker, we won't talk about the price of this beast. All I can tell you is that it will set you back a mere 63 euros a kilo!

A+

I'm 76 years old now. I've been riding motorcycles for a very long time. I've owned more than 15 of them. Mostly BMWs and two Hondas. I love my bike. I take it out practically every day. I manage to do 2000 kms in a month. I think this will be my last bike, but what a joy.... Rating : 4/5

Hi biker friends, between Bebert who does 350 kms and Jojo who does 200 there's a bit of a problem. I've got a Road King 2001 1450 FLHR injection (a real pain in the ass for dealers, for them it's the worst injection ever), I do 250 kms locally and 300 kms long distance. I'm on a stage 1 so consumption is higher than the original.
i'm delighted to have made this acquisition 4 years ago, a real pleasure to ride alone or in a group. I've done a lot of work on it (around €10,000) on the looks and mechanics, but given the bills that I find excessive at Harley, I've rolled up my sleeves and I do a lot myself, except for the engine, I've even managed to adjust the 2 slow injections. For me, mechanics and riding are the best.

I've only had trail bikes, and the first time I tried a Harley I got a real kick out of it: the feeling at low speed, the ride, the sound, it was all there! I bought a 2000 Road King and I've never regretted it, it's a real pleasure, I don't feel like riding fast, it's another way of riding, and since then I've stopped riding motorcycles, but I do ride Harleys! I'm having a blast with my road king, 1450 cm3, a real joy to ride... bubble regulator power comfort, what more could you ask for? Rating : 5/5
i've got a 2000 road king and it's a real pleasure to ride this bike, supple, easy to handle, comfortable. After 20 years without riding, I've done over 500kms to bring it home (with a Gd comfort saddle) and I could have done 500 more. The braking is fine for me, given that there's no ABS, and in any case you drive differently with an HD. I've discovered other sensations that I didn't know (I've had 3 trails before). It's a joy to look at and to ride! So don't hesitate and give it a try! Rating : 5/5

given my age,
this is my twenty-eighth motorcycle, including some "Rafales"... after doing the whole thing... I borrowed a Road (just to try it out...) and I cracked...
I've rediscovered motorcycling, and yet I wanted to stop.
With a very busy job, I can't wait to get to the weekends to clear my head.
Best regards Laurent

the road king classic weighs 345 kg (unladen), not 280. What's more, it brakes very well, nothing to do with older models. nb: I've ridden the 2002 and 2004 models. Rating : 3/5

I've had an R-K Classic since 1999, with a 1450cc engine. Today, it has 61,000 km on the odometer. No problems whatsoever. It's a real treat to start up the engine and hit the road. It's even safer in bends when there's two of us. If I had to change, I'd go back to the same bike. Rating : 5/5
