presentation of the XL 883 C Sportster Custom 2007
the 883 Custom shows its chopper orientation, with all that this implies.
Advanced controls, a 21" front wheel, a lowered rear end, raised handlebars and a two-seater seat: the 883 Custom, alias C53 in the range, has a number of essential chopper qualities. While the major redesign of the Sportster family in 2004 did not deprive this model of its specific equipment, it did add a larger, 17-liter fuel tank. Many appreciate this evolution, even if some nostalgic enthusiasts feel that a Sportster without its 'peanut' (nickname for the emblematic tanks specific to this model) is no longer really a Sportster. In use, the gain in range is real, as it rises to 300 km.
The two-seater equipment also allows two people to enjoy the sensations distilled by the twin's 883cc engine, an important point for many users. From the very first turns of the wheel, you get a very typical feel for this version of the Sportster: feet and arms forward, low seat height, the pleasant sound of the twin... impressions that many consider emblematic of the Harley myth. While taller riders are perfectly at ease at the controls of the C53, the position becomes more complicated for those under 1m70, who have to stretch out their legs to reach the footrests. The situation is even more awkward when it comes to operating the gear selector and rear brake pedal. Smaller riders will miss the central controls of the classic models.
The Evolution 883cc engine, with its ESPFI (Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection) system - a first for the Sportster family - and a new camshaft, makes for a much more responsive, high-performance motorcycle. The performance provided by the engine is not extraordinary, and the somewhat rough handling, with its 21" wheels and advanced controls, is not conducive to sporty riding either. While the 883 block is pleasant and surprisingly easy to use, it quickly runs out of steam when used as a duo. But it's comfort, or rather the lack of it, that penalizes the use of the bike for the passenger: the minimalist rear seat and short shocks make long rides for two illusory. The C53 has many of the character traits of a chopper!
For many bikers, the C53 is, or has been, the gateway to the Harley custom world. It's an excellent bike, not too expensive yet, but with everything you need to get the most out of Harley: advanced controls, a big tank, two-seater equipment and, above all, a twin full of character... A mini Softail in a way!
