presentation of the W 230 2025

Buying a new machine with a purely retro look comes with a small problem: the price tag. The most famous, the Triumph Bonneville, costs over 11 grand. At Kawa, it's kif-kif with the W 800. So what do you do when you're itching for a 60s ersatz on a rather dry budget?

The W 230 is the answer. A motorcycle of this displacement in our landscape is closer to an ephemeral curiosity than a fashion story in the making; according to a local point of view. After all, this type of motorcycle is very popular in emerging countries. And let's face it, driving around in this kind of little icon is a lot more stylish than driving around in an ordinary 2-and-a-half SUV designed to carry pizzas.

A veritable little W 800 in miniature, it takes up its theme, silhouette and spirit. All this in a reduced, bucolic dimension. The big one's a joy to ride, the little one's a flower in the teeth. It's all a question of retro-seduction, with its classic lines, spoked rims, sausage pot, tranquil seating just 84.5 cm off the ground, and an engine whose simplicity touches every piston stroke.

Kawasaki W 230 2025 - 1Kawasaki W 230 2025 - 1

Equipped with 233 cm3, the single-cylinder engine claims only limited performance. Speed, stress and performance ricochet off it and its fins. Air cools it, a single camshaft moves its two valves, and its compression effort is so far removed from modern mechanics... Another time, and 18 horsepower available, reached at 7,000 rpm. Torque is puny, at 1.9 mkg at 5,800 rpm. Should we expect more? No, because that's the size of this little bike.
Would you dive into the crowd and bellow away in a discreet café-theatre with Cabrel and a selection of guests?
Would you sip herbal tea on a sofa during a Linkin Park concert?

The engine's pretensions are simple; so is the chassis. A 265 mm disc at the front and a 22 mm one at the rear brake this little 143-kilo beast. The double-cradle steel frame holds a 37 mm fork and two rear shock absorbers. Slim tires, a rather long wheelbase for its size, 6 gears to dial in on a country tune... The W 230 exudes calm with the charm of an old suburb.

Kawasaki W 230a closer look at the W 230 soon reveals its twin sister, the Meguro S1. Same design, same chassis, same engine. It's all a question of spirit. The S1 reminds us of the distant past of Meguro, a small Japanese manufacturer whose destiny crossed paths with Kawa in the 60s. As for the W models (230 and 800), their reputation is based on the 1966 650 W1. On the ground, there are a few differences to note: the meter bases, the seat - covered with a different coating and 5 mm higher on the Kawa - chrome on the Meguro's tank, and each with its own ideological emblem.

The Kawasaki W 230 will, however, meet a serious adversary on its home turf: the Royal-Enfield 350 Classic or Bullet. Just a little more power, but with more torque, thanks to a different displacement level. If Kawa can keep the price down, the W can hope to make a small mark on the market.

Maintenance

7/25/25
Manufacturer recall in the following countries: Germany, Sweden, Slovenia.

The negative cable on the battery may cause the earthing connection to become unstable. The chassis engine mountings which create the earthing connection to the vehicle are coated with chassis paint and may have an insulating effect. This may cause the engine to cut out whilst it is running, on account of a loss of power to certain electrical components such as the engine-control unit. Engine-failure may result in an accident caused by loss of control.

Almost perfect
French Model 2025
1500km on the odometer. Nice little bike, low, light, agile. Economical. Excellent brakes. Good tires. Lacks a few cc to reach 125-130km/h. Rating : 4/5
The mini W800
French Model 2025
This w230 is a wonderful little motorcycle. Remarkably agile, very light and fuel-efficient, the engine is willing to go the extra mile despite its low 18 hp, and is well supported by an efficient 6-speed gearbox. The machine shines in town, and does well on country roads, but logically reaches its limits above 100 km/h. It's unfortunate that the bike's electronic clutch (6th gear has a maximum speed of 7,000 rpm) limits the w230's Vmax to around 113 km/h (GPS), when it could be approaching 130. Having tested its rivals, the Honda GB350S and Royal Enfield Classic 350, the W230 has a more successful retro look than the Honda and is similar to the RE, with superior build and finish quality (made in Thailand VS Indian manufacture for the other two, Japanese assembly for the Honda all the same). Its single-cylinder engine, however, has less charm than the 350 cm3 models, and people over ~1.75m will be less at ease on this little Kawasaki. Finally, in terms of price, this W230 can be negotiated at just under 4900 euros new (including CG), which is very close to its rivals. Rating : 5/5
Satisfied
French Model 2025
I've just done 1000 km with it. A very nice little bike, lacking at least 20 cm3 to make it slightly more powerful and to really distinguish it from a 125cc and reach 130km/h. Two main shortcomings: lack of fuel gauge and gear indicator. Fuel consumption of 2.6 liters. Ideal for return riders, thanks to its lightness and seat height. Rating : 4/5
French Phil Model 2026
Bnj, I own a W230 and everything is going well, it has more throttle response and torque than a 125. It rides wonderfully, handles very well and has excellent brakes. The downside is that the seat is made of reinforced concrete, although it looks wide and comfortable, which is very misleading. I'm 70 years old and proud. Rating : 5/5
Back to the future.
French Model 2025
I have a '76 Kawa 100 G7 in the garage. Blue, 2T, 90Kg, 10.5 HP (be careful, 1/2 HP is important!). We used to take 100/110 (meter) and sometimes even "Turn" when the meter went crazy... with two of us, but not as heavy as now, obviously more than 40 years ago. So, 18 HP, 12V that works well, and fuel consumption divided by 2 compared to the G7, it's tempting! Let's keep an eye on second-hand models. Rating : 4/5
French Model 2025
I like small bikes! I've got a 250 and I have a lot of fun with it. But I'm skeptical: bastard cubic capacity, power almost of a 125: no chance that it will work with the 350 honda in front which is bigger in terms of cubic capacity, a little more nervous and especially less expensive... Even the Royals do better. Rating : 1/5
French
it's true that the competition is serious, and it will sell, alas, at a discount (no standard accessories). The charm of these small cars, in addition to their cubic capacity, is also their utility, and for that you need options. Rating : 5/5
French Model 2025
I'd be crazy about it with another color and 1,000 euros less. Rating : 4/5
Nice bike, too bad it's not a twin-cylinder like the one I had in the 90s, the Z250, which is really very playful and enjoyable every day. Rating : 4/5
French Model 2025
Super I hope it will be a big success we want bikes like that Rating : 5/5
French Model 2025
I don't think you need more than that for short, or even medium, commutes... All with a really cool look! Rating : 4/5
Au look accrocheur
French Model 2025
Having had more powerful and varied-looking motorcycles for many years, I have to admit that this model is superb, and that it makes you want to ride it again Rating : 4/5
