there's sport, and then there's driving. The difference lies in the art of trajectory, the search for a sharp, taut line of curves, the pleasure of exploiting every watt and always staying within a rib of speed.

This bushido-like quest is the very reason for the ZX-4RR. It's a tracker like no one had dared to hope for before. Small in displacement, yet attractive in its promise. Don't think of it as a slightly more seasoned Ninja 400. In truth, it's a ball of nerves just waiting for hysteria.

The lady is a credit to the Ninja lineage. Silhouette very similar to the ZX-6R 636, Ninja 650 and Ninja 400, racy instinct and tortured fairing - the Kawa dimension is fully expressed, under the shadow of the ZX-10R. In fact, it features the same taillight, KRT replica color scheme and engine architecture. And that's where the sublimation begins.

With the ZX-4R, Kawasaki offers the return of the 4-cylinder engine in a pocket format. Yes, 4 small 100 cm3 spaces, where revs are going to go wild. There's no point in imagining humming along or cruising on the torque. Its maxi is so high up that you won't even think of winding it up.... but of skinning it! The small 399 cm3, DOHC, 16-valve block develops an incredible 77 horsepower for this size class! A potato that even reaches 80 hp with the forced-air intake system. That's almost 80% more watts than the 400 Ninja cousin and competitors in the same sector.

The worry, but also the benefit, of this type of boiler is that the power is far from the revs. On the ZX-4RR, you'll have to go for it at 14,500 rpm. Hence the thrill of tapping into that power, keeping it within 5 digits of the rev counter, and keeping close to that red zone beyond 15,000 rpm. And make sure you take the bend with the knife between your teeth. That's why you'll choose an RR over an R: to fine-tune the chassis and be more efficient.

the ZX-4RR not only stands out from the R thanks to its green color scheme, but also thanks to its Up&Down shifter, which is essential for sporty riding worthy of the name. The science of riding then turns to the suspension settings, which the R can't boast. The Showa SFF-BP upside-down fork with large piston is equipped with a preload adjuster. The BFRC Lite rear shock (also Showa) offers far more possibilities, with compression, rebound and preload adjustment.

The steel trellis frame isn't as noble as a good old aluminum perimeter, but it should do the job. Those who knew the VFR 400 R and ZXR 400 R will find the pill a little hard to swallow.
Younger riders, on the other hand, will be delighted to enjoy a 4.3-inch TFT color display, with an attractive racing display in addition to the standard mode, a Bluetooth link for smartphone connection, and control over on-board electronics. The ZX-4R features KTRC traction control with 3 levels + off and 2 power modes. Assistants are controlled by 4 Driving Modes: Sport, Road, Rain and Rider. The latter allows you to configure the aids as you wish.

Where the ZX-4RR fails is in its weight. At 189 kilos, this 400 is not particularly light. A KTM RC 390 weighs 25 kilos less. We could even go so far as to compare it to its 90s grandmother, who weighed in at under 160 kilos...... But "only" 65 horsepower. This gap in time allows us to see the evolution of engine performance. But also of standards that have only added weight over the years.
At the same time, pollutant emissions have been drastically reduced. The Kawa passes Euro5, apparently without having lost any horsepower in the process.

With this dog in a bowling alley, Kawasaki dominates the 400 class. The ZX-4R / RR can tickle the power of a Yamaha 700 R7 and many other machines of the same displacement. But don't be fooled into thinking they're in the same league. Negotiate the bend without a big engine rev, and the others will leave you in the lurch, with their greater displacement and torque, as well as their much earlier availability. But the Kawasaki ZX-4RR doesn't see it that way. It sees only the traj', and it's by keeping it there with its screaming 4-cylinder that the pleasure will be unleashed - for the rider as well as for it.
