presentation of the EN 500 1992
In the midsize custom category, there are 2 opposing philosophies. Either the manufacturer develops a typical custom engine with low power but plenty of torque from the lowest revs (e.g. the Honda 600 Shadows), or he opts for an existing engine not necessarily the best suited to the genre, but which will augur a particular character.
kawasaki, with its long history of sports bikes, has often designed its customs in this spirit. The EN 500 is no exception to this tradition.
first produced in 450cc, the EN was powered by a half GPZ 900 Ninja. In 1990, it took over the 500cc GPZ 500S, which was no less sporty. The engine was toned down for the occasion. But despite this softening, the twin-cylinder still develops 55 of the GPZ's 60 horsepower. This cavalry arrives a little more gradually than on the sporty model, but the health is still there. The engine knocks under 2,500 rpm, but retains its brio at high revs. The classic secondary drive chain has been replaced by a much cleaner and quieter belt.
the chassis is much more classic. The chassis preserves manoeuvrability despite the long forks and substantial caster. A plus in the city. On the other hand, while the frame is rigid and fairly neutral, the suspension isn't up to scratch on rough surfaces. The braking system is adequate, but nothing more, and will suffice for the EN's urban vocation.
while the engine makes for a good pace (150 km/h cruising speed), the suspension, brakes, comfort and lack of protection limit the EN's ability to take on long trips. The saddle isn't very comfortable on long trips, and the double-decker prevents you from changing position while riding.
this little custom therefore prefers to confine itself to the city, where its maneuverability and pleasing aesthetics make it stand out. Kawasaki didn't skimp on the chrome, and the engine, though much more modern-looking than we're used to seeing on a custom, fits perfectly with the small dragster's lines.
its 715 mm seat height made it accessible to the greatest number, yet the EN 500 was not a commercial success. The arrival of basic rodsters such as the Bandit 400 (then 600), Zephyr 550 (and 750) and later the ER-5 didn't really help it find its place among urban utility vehicles.

THANK YOU Rating : 4/5 Respond to fred
Its plus points are aesthetics and fast starts....for a custom bike. Minus 6-speed gearbox and little torque, you can't have everything with a 500 cm3. Rating : 5/5 Participate in the conversation
