presentation of the 690 DUKE TRACK 2012
the European Junior Cup. Alongside the powerhouses of world Superbike racing, the antechamber to this championship is home to a nursery of young talent. Their weapon: a carefully prepared KTM 690 Duke. The singular mono roadster from Mattighofen replaces the Kawasaki 250 Ninja in this rookie cup. For 2012, these young wolves will have three times as much potato to play with over 14 rounds.
after the RC8 R Track series, designed exclusively for on-track use, the orange brand is now applying the concept to the Duke. KTM has decided to release this little circuit bomb for customers other than those of the E.J.C. Everyone has the right to have fun, don't they!?!! Everyone? Almost: the 690 Duke Track, an exact replica of the machines entered in the E.J.C., will be produced in a limited series of 200 units.
the 'Ready to race' concept is fully exploited here. The Duke becomes a real little devil of the vibrators. Already a top performer, the single-cylinder engine gains 9 horsepower thanks to the addition of an Akrapovic pot, a PowerParts camshaft and a modified air filter housing. The 79-hp output is impressive; equal to that of a Ducati Monster of the same displacement...
13% more power, and 10 kg less on this roadster, already the lightest in its class (and many others). As the beast will only be putting its wheels (lightweight Marchesini) on the track, KTM has not hesitated to remove all superfluous items. Headlights, indicators, number-plate brackets, ABS systems and other knick-knacks are consigned to the dustbin. Another trip to Powerparts for the right equipment? Let's take a concrete example: a firmer, higher seat that gives the rider more freedom to change position, and makes the machine much more ergonomic. Footpegs increase ground clearance by moving the feet higher and further back, while the Renthal handlebars provide a more race-like position. New brake caliper and radial Brembo master cylinder, to bite into a thicker brake disc.
Race machine rhymes with modified suspension. The 43 mm WP inverted fork gains 15 mm of travel and integral adjustment. The amorto is also fully adjustable. The engine cowling is more than just decorative. Compulsory, it allows fluids to be recovered in the event of oil or fluid loss.
the 690 Duke Track is priced at less than 10,000 euros, with a fuel consumption of just 7 liters per 100 km. A fine tool that reinforces Katoche's desire to conquer the hearts of track riders.
