presentation of the 200 DUKE 2013
ah..... If I had a little more..... That's the kind of thinking you'd ask yourself in a lot of circumstances. And the Duke mini is thinking much the same thing. In 125, the little Katoche is already the envy of many, but its 15 horsepower may be just right in certain conditions. A little more displacement but identical chassis and bodywork, here's the 200 cm3 version. A total mimicry that only the little sticker indicating the displacement will allow you to distinguish. The problem for the consumer market: you need a motorcycle license to ride it. The advantage: 10 more horsepower, enabling the single-cylinder to proudly display 26 bourriques. The same value as some Japanese 2 and a half, such as the Honda CBR 250 R or the Suzuki 250 Inazuma.
stroke and bore have been increased from 124.7 to 199.5 cm3. The majority of internal moving parts are revised accordingly: camshafts, connecting rod, piston, valve; and let's not forget the essential modifications to the cylinder, airbox, injection and exhaust. Around the engine and under the plastics, the essentials remain: trellis frame, WP suspension, Brembo brakes, etc...
by boosting the engine without touching the rest of the machine, KTM is a winner on many levels: more power, limited development costs, a contained price increase (400 euros), and the image of the 125 Duke that shook up its little world. Although the 200 is 10 kilos heavier than the 125, it has all the equipment you need to have fun. And its very vindictive design is very popular.
Its only real problem, as with its rivals, is that the French public has lost interest in this displacement range. In France, if you're between 126 and 599 cm3, you're out of luck. And yet, the current context is increasingly favorable to affordable, fun, not too greedy and light machines. But go and explain the reason to a biker who, by definition, runs on passion alone.
