presentation of the 990 Supermoto R 2013
at the bend in a winding mountain track, the little orange rider asked in astonishment.
"- Grande R, that you've got big Brembo monobloc radial calipers!.
- All the better to plant crazy brakes, my child." Replied the KTM Supermoto 990 R. From the top of its 875 mm seat, the Katoche in hyper clash colors was eagerly waiting to devour the frightened virolos.
"Great R, what light wheels you have!
-even lighter than my standard SM sister' s; that's to change angles better, my child.
- Grande R, you've got a big twin!
- With over 115 horsepower; all the better to scotch young foxes in place, my child.
- Grande R, that you've got...
- Hello! Will you stop pissing me off with your buttered toast!?! We're going to ride, yes?"
less reassured but already excited by the vigor of the 990 SMR, the little orange rider understood the delicate invitation to take the controls of this racing-type Supermoto. It has to be said that this katoche is nothing like the grandmother with the little soups and the tender eyes. Its very trashy look (orange frame, white trim, black and carbon accents, crazy eyes), less-than-virtuous twin, improved suspension and slimmer seat and fuel tank make this supermotard a tool for twisty roads. Claimed to weigh less than 190 kg, the SMR gains a few kilos over the SM, but it's the more incisive chassis that the little orange rider will feel the difference and the bike's more eloquent vivacity. Even more sporty for this already very sporty machine, which has no end of surprises in store for our little orange rider.
in mid-2012, the SMR underwent an austerity cure, making it much more accessible, safer but less noble. With the addition of Bosch 9M+ ABS and a price tag of almost 1,500 euros less, the ploughman of tight courses becomes very attractive. What you gain in terms of wallet, you lose in terms of equipment. Calipers are no longer monobloc, rims that used to be forged are now molded, no more surface treatment for fork tubes, a few fewer carbon parts, and 3 kilos more on the scales.

Having tried every SM on the market, its only competitor is its little sister, the SMCR, but with a much narrower range of use

Every day, in all weathers, on almost every type of road, it's a pleasure to ride. Of course, on the freeway, straight as an arrow, the position is a pain at high speed. A good pair of cross tubes, and you're ready to go. Its preferred domain is the mountain pass, the pass, the pass... :)
Its engine is just as at home in town as it is on roads and freeways. Incredible! Gone are the 3 and 4cyl two-bit engines. And then there's the problem: what to take after it? And then it blazes. Nothing comes to mind. Maybe a trail 1200gs or a multistrada, but shit, I'm not 50 yet and I'm not crossing the world!!!!
If you're a small rider, don't bother, or go for a Ducati hypermotard. If you're tall, this is the bike for you.

In town, it consumes: 15L = 120kms
For the rest, I don't have a soft grip, I stay on 150-160kms. I think it can do better, but to tell you the truth, I don't care...
I'm now at 8000kms on the odometer, and the beast is getting free. I'd read that the break-in period ended at around 10,000kms. This seems more than true.
I feel like I don't have the same machine anymore, or that I'm the one who's improved. That must be it.
I'm still as happy as ever on it. I'm a wreck when wheeling, but my front wheel is regularly 20 cm off the ground.
The LC8 seems to exceed 60,000kms easily, well maintained. That gives me a bit of time ;)
