presentation of the FREERIDE 250 R 2014

The Freeride is intended to be a less extreme version of KTM enduro. After presenting the 350 with a 4-stroke engine, Katoche has now thought of the lovers of the cylinder with holes. The higher-pitched yelps, the different engine character, the delicate smells of 2-stroke. For them, the Freeride also exists in this 250 R version.

the decision to introduce a brand-new two-stroke model to the recent Freeride segment may come as a surprise at first. It will especially surprise those who have never had the opportunity to enjoy the punch of a powerful two-stroke engine installed in a lively, lightweight off-road chassis. Those who have already had the pleasure know: such an engine is truly special, as the combustion gases drive the linkage twice as often as with a four-stroke. As a result, KTM two-stroke enduros designed for performance are highly responsive right from the lowest revs, providing real riding pleasure. In keeping with the Freeride spirit, the emphasis has been placed on torque and handling rather than maximum power, resulting in a bike designed above all for off-road fun.

The integrated fastening system facilitates opening and access to the fuel tank, air filter and electrical components. At 915 mm, the seat height is considerably lower than that of a competition enduro.

tachometer

For the first time, the 2014 Freeride models feature Trail Tech's new digital on-board instrument with integrated indicator lights, distinguished by its wide range of functions and particularly intuitive operation.

brakes

Formula brakes have been further improved for the new generation. A reworked piston system in the front brake master cylinder ensures constant pressure and greater robustness. Radial calipers with four pistons at the front and two at the rear work in perfect harmony with the lightweight Wave discs (260/210 mm) to deliver optimum braking performance with excellent brake proportioning.

swingarm

The light-alloy swingarm, weighing just 3.2 kg, was specifically designed by KTM engineers to support the frame and spring damping system with controlled flexibility in the direction of oscillation. With its high resistance to torsion, it also contributes to the Freeride 250 R's excellent trajectory stability. The progressive PDS shock absorber is directly linked to the swingarm.

suspension components

A sturdy 43 mm WP inverted fork gives the Freeride 250 R and its high-quality CNC-drilled fork crowns excellent stability, while offering immediate responsiveness and perfect damping. With suspension comfort that remains exceptional, the Freeride 250 R's damping is particularly well-balanced front and rear, even for heavy shocks, which is an advantage in fast passages over demanding terrain. Damping is adjustable for rebound and compression; the rear shock also features separate low/high-speed compression adjustment.

footrests

Eccentric supports allow the footrests to be shifted backwards by 8 mm. In addition to the ergonomic adjustment, this allows you to influence the bike's behavior in traction and cornering by applying an adapted riding technique.

rims and tires

The Freeride 250 R is fitted with reworked, extremely lightweight spoked wheels with GIANT anodized light-alloy rims, CNC-machined hubs and light-alloy spoke nipples. The new trial-inspired Trial-Maxx tires in 2.75-21 and 4.00-18 have been developed by Maxxis especially for KTM Freeride. They feature a soft, high-grip tread compound with a less compact lug profile than trials tires. This makes it easier to break out of muddy conditions without the tires damaging the ground too much. The Maxxis tires on the Freeride 250 R offer far superior handling and better wear resistance than 100% trials tires.

fuel tank

Thanks to the more compact 2-stroke engine than the 4-stroke model, KTM engineers were able to increase the capacity of the lightweight polyethylene fuel tank to 7 liters. The tank's transparent plastic allows the rider to quickly see the fuel level.

frame

KTM engineers have worked hard on the frame of the Freeride 250 R to take full advantage of the potential of the much more compact two-stroke engine. As with the Freeride 350, the frame is a mix of chromium-molybdenum steel tubes and bolted or welded light-metal alloy components. Compared to the Freeride 350's frame, the compact two-stroke engine and side-mounted exhaust provide 60 mm more ground clearance, making it easier to negotiate difficult terrain, especially as the steering angle is very wide: it's precisely on tricky sections that the Freeride 250 R lets you ride without putting your foot down.

gearbox

Compared to a 250 EXC, the new 6-speed gearbox specially developed for Freeride models has a different gear spacing, with the first five gears shorter and the sixth longer. A short 46-12 transmission (Freeride 350 12/48) ensures powerful traction and lively acceleration, especially on difficult terrain.

exhaust

Unlike the Freeride 350, on which the exhaust elbow is located under the engine, KTM engineers have been able to position it laterally on the Freeride 250 R to integrate it optimally into the bike's lines. Like the sporty enduros, the Freeride two-stroke is homologated with a special clamp, enabling it to be used on roads open to traffic.

engine

At the heart of the Freeride 250 R, KTM engineers have improved the 2-stroke engine of the 250 EXC enduro competition model by reducing weight by 2 kg despite the electric starter, followed by an adjustment to ensure optimum handling. The Freeride 250 R engine features an all-new cylinder with timing diagrams and channels adapted to the desired torques, as well as a modified piston. Compared to the 250 EXC, and as on trials bikes, the exhaust valve has been removed to improve torque and piston life. The result is a simpler, more robust engine.
