from 1993 to 2025RS - Sport-GT at BMW is called RennSport.
In the 90s, the sport-GT category was one of the most popular on the market, with the VFR the undisputed star. BMW entered the category with the R 1100 RS. A sign of the sector's importance, it inaugurates a new and very important generation of Boxer engine: the 1084 cm3 with 4 valves per cylinder. With a look that's both sporty and serious, the R 1100 RS offers sport and protection, with just 90 hp but plenty of power, 9.5 mkg of torque and a formidable chassis. It also inaugurates the famous Telelever front axle.
In 2001, it evolved into the 1150, with a stronger engine. A new symbol of a change of era: it is the last of the R family to receive this 1130 cm3 flat-twin. The R 1150 RS gains 5 horsepower.
In 2005, BMW took a break from this lineage with the introduction of the R 1200 ST. A difficult face that totally baffled the public and immediately derailed its career. The brand then put the Sport-GT category in the hands of the K 1200 S and K 1300 S for almost 10 years.
It wasn't until 2015 that the RS returned. This time with the 1200 double ACT engine and much more power. The R 1200 RS gets 125 hp and 12.7 mkg, an almost sexy and dynamic silhouette, and a wealth of electronics.
2019 sees a further evolution of the engine, with displacement increased to 1254 cm3 and the adoption of variable valve timing. The R 1250 RS now boasts 136 hp and 14.5 mkg under an unchanged exterior. Electronics are further strengthened.
In mid-2025, major changes take the RS into a new generation. The silhouette is sharpened, the frame completely redesigned, the Telelever fork redesigned and the engine totally redesigned. Lighter, more compact, this 1300 delivers a beautiful, homogeneous 145 hp and a whopping 15.2 mkg of torque. In addition to even denser electronics, the R 1300 RS can be fitted with a robotized gearbox and radar system.
