presentation of the LMX 161-H 2018
A few years ago, electric motorcycles were the preserve of a handful of enthusiasts, but today they are flourishing in unprecedented proportions.
We're still a long way from a world where all-electricity will have supplanted the good old combustion engine, but the trend is clearly towards the democratization of this technology. Among the many products trying to break into this field, here's a little French model, the LMX 161 H, which is a featherweight in the category.
Designed in Isère by two young engineers, Adam Mercier and Lucas Suteau, this minimalist electric freeride bike, a cross between a mountain bike and an Enduro, has the distinction of weighing just 42 kilos!
It has to be said that the LMX 161 H's design leaves little room for the superfluous. Just take a look at the chassis: 6.5kg aluminum frame, tiny swingarm, mountain bike forks and brake discs... When you realize that the two designers were initially working on an electric ATV concept, it's easy to understand how this machine came to be...
But don't be fooled by the desire to save on the cost of this bike. On the contrary, this bike has been designed to be fun above all else.
Light, maneuverable and as easy to handle as a downhill mountain bike, the LMX 161-H, with its remote motor boasting up to 7500 watts, offers performance similar to that of an 83cc motocross bike, and can climb inclines of up to 45°. More than enough power to let off steam on the back roads. And, please, without disturbing the surrounding game and walkers!
In its current incarnation, the LMX is primarily intended for motocross and enduro riding, but it also hopes to find a place in the outdoor professions (farming, hunting, etc.).
But that's not all. The two partners are now aiming for L1e-B certification, synonymous with road use. With this accreditation, the machine would be accessible anywhere in Europe with a car license or BSR. With its compact size, light weight, maneuverability and top speed of 45km/h, the LMX 161-H has serious 'urban-compatible' credentials. In terms of range, the manufacturer claims a maximum of 80 km, with a full battery recharge in 3 hours.
The €7,800 price tag may put some people off... But to launch their baby, the engineers have put on their sales hats and are offering a pre-reservation price of €5,340 (i.e. a 30% discount!) for those who take the plunge before October 31. Not to mention possible government assistance for the purchase of a zero-emission vehicle.
The first deliveries will take place in May 2018.
