founded in 1993 by Marc Teissier and Joël Domergue, Scorpa designs, develops and markets trial bikes.scorpa designs, develops and markets trials motorcycles, with the aim of creating high-performance bikes with a strong identity and a high level of quality.
Completed in just 8 weeks, the Rotax-powered "Type 293" prototype competed in the World and French Trials Championships under the guidance of Bruno Camozzi. The sporting success of this new trials bike, and the interest it aroused, led to the decision to go into industrial production, and to develop a distribution network.
in November 1993, following its official presentation, the first mass-produced Scorpa, the Works 294, was built and 100 units sold. Its successor in October 1994, the Works 295, an improved version, sold 250 units.
1995 :
at the Mondial du Deux Roues in Paris, a new model, Easy, is presented. with a strong identity in terms of technical solutions and design, sells over 300 units.
1996 :
the new Easy model innovates technically with the adoption of an innovative rear brake system.rear brake system, as well as an intake and exhaust resonance system. Produced in two displacements, 250 and 280 cm³.
1998 :
victory in the Six Days of Scotland with English rider Graham Jarvis. 4th in the Trial World Championship with English rider Graham Jarvis
1999 :
scorpa is approached by Yamaha Motor Corporation to develop a partnership, supplying 250 cm³ two-stroke engines, then 125 cm³ four-stroke engines, and more recently 250 cm³ four-stroke engines.
While the Easy 99 still features some technical improvements, Scorpa begins development of a 100% new model, designed around a new engine, scheduled for launch in 2000.
2000 :
the SY 250 Racing is born of this first collaboration. Research and development of a new frame geometry, including a shock absorber without a connecting rod, resulted in the creation of a technically and stylistically unique motorcycle.
A world first, it incorporates mass-produced aluminum components fitted as standard (footpegs, upper and lower tees, swingarm ends), as well as a number of parts in chromium-molybdenum or ergal steel alloys.
2002 :
due to the limited size of the competition motorcycle market, Scorpa decline its SY 250 Racing model into a SY 250 Long Ride model, thus reaching a clientele more geared towards trialing. This model features a tank and seat kit offering more autonomy (5 liters).
2003 :
in a bid to broaden its customer base, Scorpa launches a new model, the TY-S 125F. It's the fruit of a new collaboration between Scorpa and Yamaha, responding to a strong demand from a hitherto neglected market: leisure-discovery trials.
The new bike is intended to be a worthy heir to the Yamaha TY 125: it will take on the "TY" name, with the authorization of the Japanese manufacturer.
The choice of engine will be a 125 cm³, accessible to all, 4-stroke type to meet the new Euro 2 and then 3 homologation standards for 2008.
2005 :
a larger-displacement version, the TY-S 175F, was launched to expand the range and satisfy English-speaking markets (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.).
Designed as the successor to the SY-250, the Scorpa SY-250F uses a Yamaha four-stroke engine. originally designed for enduro use, this engine has been modified to suit the world of trials... Weighing just 2.7 kg, the 15CDV6 chromium-molybdenum steel frame ensures lightness and strength.
The SY-250F Long Ride is both a trials bike and a touring bike. With its 4.5-liter tank, saddle and Yamaha 250 cm³ four-stroke engine, it can handle all types of trails with autonomy and comfort... The Long Ride package, tank and saddle, is also available separately to fit the Racing version.
One of Scorpa's most impressive products is the 4Tricks. It's a mountain bike with a motor grafted onto it. The frame consists of a single beam acting as a tank. The single-cylinder, four-stroke 70 cm³ engine is suspended under this beam.
Recently, Scorpa has also come up with a concept somewhere between trial and enduro. The T-Ride 250F is supposed to offer the climbing ability of a trials bike with the relative comfort of an enduro bike.
Since 2005, Scorpa motorcycles have also been distributed through the Yamaha Motor France sales network. The same approach has been applied to the Yamaha Belgium distributor network since 2006.
In addition, the partnership with Yamaha has enabled Scorpa to penetrate the Japanese motorcycle market, winning contracts such as the Tokyo Police Academy, which was equipped with the TY-S 125F model.
More recently, the École Nationale de Police in Sens has just purchased a TY-S 175F model to train all future police motorcyclists.
Sales are based on a network of French dealers and 23 official importers for export markets, representing around 60% of sales. The Scorpa brand currently accounts for an 18% share of an annual global market estimated at 11,000 motorcycles. The brand has already sold over 10,000 machines worldwide.
2009 :
The Nîmes Commercial Court declared the manufacturer in liquidation. Scorpa is taken over by Sherco in autumn 2009. The 2-stroke models are powered by Sherco engines, and the 4-stroke models by Yamaha engines.
