Energica Motor Company was born within the CRP industrial group, an Italian player in F1 and precision machining. In 2009-2010, the CRP Racing branch designs the eCRP, a 100% electric motorcycle competing in TTXGP, the first "zero-carbon" championship. The eCRP won the 2010 European title with Alessandro Brannetti and was runner-up in the 2011 World Championship, establishing CRP/Energica as a pioneer of electric performance on two wheels.
The project is headed by CRP engineer Livia Cevolini, who goes on to launch the Energica brand and become its CEO.
The transition to the road: Ego, Eva, EsseEsse9
Presented at EICMA 2013 and marketed in 2015, the Energica Ego established itself as the benchmark Italian electric superbike, with trellis frame, Brembo brakes and a top speed announced at around 240-245 km/h depending on version.
his platform will give rise to the Eva (roadster) and, later, the EsseEsse9 (neo-retro roadster). In 2019-2020, Energica makes a technological leap: 21.5 kWh batteries (+60% vs. 13.4 kWh) and widespread use of DC fast charging (CCS), making the brand one of the few motorcycles to combine AC level 1/2 and DC level 3 charging.
In 2021, the EMCE motorization (co-developed with Mavel) will lighten the machines by around 10 kg and promise +5-10% range, while boosting peak power to 126 kW (171 hp) on the Ego+.
On the world stage: official MotoE supplier (2019-2022)
Dorna chooses Energica as sole supplier to the FIM Enel MotoE championship from 2019: a major technological showcase for the racing Ego Corsa. In October 2021, Dorna makes official the end of the Energica cycle after 2022 and the arrival of Ducati from 2023.
Range and flagship product (2022-2023)
In May 2022, Energica unveils the Experia, the brand's first "green tourer": 22.5 kWh battery (19.6 kWh useful), range claims of up to 261 mpg / 420 km city, 160 mpg / 256 km combined, and 0-80% rapid recharge in ~40 min. The specialist press hails the part-cycle/electric balance and awards it distinctions in 2023.
Top-of-the-range road specifications remain a hallmark of the brand: Ego+ with 0-100 km/h announced in 2.6 s, liquid HSM engine, massive torque, advanced electronics.
Shareholding, crisis and legal proceedings
- 2021-2022: American Ideanomics enters the capital (20% in March 2021), then completes a 70% takeover in March 2022, leading to the exit of Borsa Italiana.
-late 2024: the company enters insolvency/liquidation proceedings in Italy, with the Modena court initiating disposal procedures. (This is reported in several leading media and legal notices)
-summer 2025: the situation changes: a group of Singaporean investors makes an offer with a down payment as part of the judicial sale. The trade press and financial sources report that a buyout via judicial sale has been agreed for August 8, 2025, with the management team remaining in place and finalization expected within 60 days. Energica is therefore in the recovery phase, with a return to operations announced.
