presentation of the Model X Reloaded 2014
until the late 60s, the British dominated the world motorcycle market. Iconic models such as the Brough Superior SS100, the Vincent Black Shadow and the Matchless Model X were all part of this hegemonic supremacy. Although deeply rooted in collective idolatry, the British industry had to bow to the Japanese hurricane. Despite the dark years, the flame never really went out. It continued to glow timidly in the depths of the most cavernous and nostalgic minds. Candles still burn in tribute to that glorious era, and it's from their wax that an Italian investor, Mr Malenotti, has decided to model a worthy heiress. The Matchless Model X is back!
matchless has always been a brand of excellence. And even if the appellation "Rolls Royce of motorcycles" went to its compatriot Brough Superior, the Model X was at least considered a Bentley. In the '30s, it was equipped with the most powerful twin-cylinder engine of its time. In fact, its hi-tech superior borrowed it at the end of its career. Matchless has always been at the forefront of motorcycle innovation. That's probably what enabled him to win the very first Tourist Trophy, in 1907, before JD (Joey Dunlop).
true to its forebears, the Matchless Model X Reloaded is a blend of prestige and innovation. At first glance, it looks like a marriage between the Brough Superior SS100 and a Triumph Rocket 3. It could hardly be more British, even if Italian refinement shines through from handlebar to saddle. From a distance, it appears massive and imposing, but up close, it proves coquettish and delicate. The choice of a V2 engine, the overall shape and the pinched exhaust, give the impression that it has been sculpted from the stele of the first Model X of the name. A brief eye-stop on the exposed spring fork, which in this necromantic context is reminiscent of a raw skeleton, the result of a daring resurrection.
one small regret is that the engine is not British, but American. At least it's Saxon. But sharing a language doesn't necessarily mean sharing a speech. Still, he's got a lot to tell us, including 112 hp at 5200 rpm! And he'll do it with a big, fat voice, since he cubes 1916 cm3. It's being developed by S&S. They have another, better-known customer in our neck of the woods, the plush roadster brand Avinton.
the technical innovations are numerous. Perhaps the most impressive, even surreal, is the number of pistons on each brake caliper. Quite simply, the Model X has enough pistons to brake six Honda CB500s. Its single front caliper alone has 12 pistons, compared with 6 for the rear; in all, it has 18! That's a lot. Their function is more stylistic than practical: the standard hypersport with the most pistons has 6 at the front, compared with 1 at the rear (Yamaha R1 2009/2015).
the front suspension is equally esoteric. Based on a parallelogram design, it consists of two struts, one of which is fixed. The second hinges above the first and, as it moves, sensually caresses the mudguard... Images are worth more than words.
the second original feature is the frame structure. The English brand has adopted a solution that is sharp, to say the least, since it uses superimposed blades. The aim is to achieve the perfect balance between flexibility and rigidity.
the Matchless Model X Reloaded is totally modular. The riding position can be adjusted to suit your mood. The footrests are doubled and swivel to offer either a conventional or custom position. The saddle can be moved back or forward to ensure that the seat fits your feet perfectly. The handlebars and headlight can also be adjusted to suit your needs. Judge for yourself.
