presentation of the GRANPASSO R 1200 2018
An R for Racing, as seen on many an adrenalin-fuelled machine? Well, not exactly. For the Granpasso trail bike, it's more about sport and play. Even though the standard version of this machine is already capable of this kind of frolicking.
Morini didn't go for the radical, but for the urban/road, by modifying a few elements of the chassis. The most obvious is the adoption of 17-inch wheels, the same as on the Corsaro. This allows it to be fitted with roadster tires. More accessible, the Granpasso R lowers the seat by 32 mm. A nice touch. And you'd almost think it was a good deal, since the R is less expensive than the 1200 Granpasso.
But there's a catch. Okay, the price is lower. But the Öhlins amorto is gone, replaced by a Paioli. This component is fully adjustable, as is the 50 mm inverted Marzocchi fork.
Technically, the rest of the machine is identical. Lattice frame, Brembo brakes with 2-piston calipers only, a weight of 210 kilos among the lightest in the category. And the growling 1187 cm3 engine, delivering 118 horsepower on the trail.
A gamble, a test or an attempt? Very little is known about this Gran Passo R, which remains in the Morini catalog despite its enigmatic discretion. Its success is uncertain, especially as its price tag places it in competition with machines with a strong reputation.
