presentation of the 1100 Sport 1995
Presenting the 1100 Sport with the "Le Mans" models might seem a real crime of lèse-majesté to die-hard fans of the brand. It's true that the 1100 Sport, presented in 1994, is not a direct descendant of the "Le Mans" models, but a 2-valve version of the 1000 Daytona.
This arbitrary choice to place it alongside the legendary "Le Mans" is due above all to its place in the Moto-Guzzi range. The Daytona has always been presented as a luxury sports bike, while the Sport was tasked with replacing the "Le Mans" family.
The manufacturer's marketing department must have hesitated for a long time to abandon a name that had designated Mandello's sports bikes for over 20 years. The "Le Mans" certainly carried too outdated an image in the eyes of the general public for the manufacturer to resign itself to marking a break in the naming of its sports family.
Although the brand was still in a precarious financial position in the early '90s, it had high hopes for its Daytona (with Wittner frame and wittner frame and 4 valves per cylinder engine), but also on its 1064cc 2-valve engine, inaugurated with the California 1100i.
The Sport will inherit the Daytona's modern chassis and 1100 engine (initially without electronic fuel injection). And this newcomer takes a major step forward compared to the 1000 Le Mans, both technically and aesthetically.

This time, the Tonti frame is abandoned in favor of the technique developed by John Wittner: a large-section central beam linking the steering column to a system consisting of 2 plates. The Cantilever-inspired rear suspension links the swingarm directly to the single-beam. No high-tech materials or advanced manufacturing techniques here. John Wittner is a brilliant designer who comes from a racing background, but has evolved in disciplines with reasonable budgets (Battle Of Twins US). He therefore designed a simple, efficient and easy-to-produce chassis - a real boon for a manufacturer with limited resources. He gave Mandello del Lario a chance to rebuild a modernized range. Its frame combines stability (it's a Guzzi, not a bike), front-end precision and, above all, excellent suspension work. It shines in big curves and braking phases, a little less so in tight turns.

Aesthetically, the Sport inherits the Daytona's new front end (a real success), but gains a two-seater seat with a modern, aggressive design that's much more in tune with the times than the single-seater shell of its luxurious sibling. The overall look is tasteful, with timeless lines. The colors are very... Italian: red, yellow, black, but also gray...
This Sport, although it didn't make the headlines in the trade press when it was is perhaps one of the most successful motorcycle models of the first half of the 90s. Along with the 1000 Daytona, it proved that passion could more than make up for lack of means, by combining the best of tradition with simple, modern solutions. Moto Guzzi certainly saved its skin by bringing out this model, which restored the market's and investors' confidence in its abilities and creativity. The Sport was replaced in 2002 (after a short period without a streamlined V11) by a new Le Mans: the V11 Le Mans.
