Chinese motorcycle manufacturer CFMOTO recently filed a patent for an innovative retention system, marking a significant advance in two-wheeler safety.
Safety for motorcyclists: the new CFMOTO system unveiled
In contrast to traditional seat belts, which are often considered unsuitable for motorcycles due to the associated risks, CFMOTO offers a system which is triggered only in specific situations. This mechanism is designed to keep the rider in place during frontal impacts or hard braking, while allowing rapid release in the event of a side impact or fall.
Equipped with sensors and advanced software, the system can determine the exact conditions requiring the rider to be held or released, ejecting the seat from its support if necessary.
The CFMOTO patent proposes several devices for this purpose:
1. Rigid side bars: attached on either side of the rider, these bars would be attached at tank level and at the rear of the saddle, aiming to stabilize the rider in the event of a frontal impact.
2. Rear bars with side articulations: An improved version of the side bars, attached to the rear of the saddle with articulations for greater flexibility.
3. Soft belt: Similar to car seat belts, this would attach under the saddle and wrap around the rider's waist to provide temporary support. Biker safety is constantly improving, thanks to innovations in protective equipment and technologies integrated into motorcycles.

Illustrated on the 1250 TR-G, this system could represent a major breakthrough in this field. It remains to be seen whether this technology will be incorporated into the brand's future models.
Seat belts for motorcyclists: a revolution?
The idea of holding the rider in place is not entirely new. CFMOTO's project is inspired in part by earlier concepts, notably that of Italdesign in 2021. The latter proposed an intelligent device with a rigid backrest mounted on a flexible support and adjustable belts, aimed at securing the pilot while adapting to his movements and release needs in the event of a fall.
However, we'll have to wait and see whether this innovative technology will be fully adopted and implemented in future motorcycle models.
