Innovations can come from anywhere, and that's a good thing. Just as we learned this year that CFMOTO had filed a patent for a new support system for motorcyclists, now the airbag system could be rethought?
Two-wheel airbags: proven effective even at low speeds
A recent study by the Spanish development and research center CESVIMAP highlights the effectiveness of airbag systems in reducing the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The research focused on the effectiveness of this passive safety system, particularly at relatively low speeds.
Crash tests were carried out at a speed of 40 km/h, a choice justified by the fact that almost two-thirds of motorcycle accidents occur at speeds below this threshold. Simulations included perpendicular impact scenarios between a motorcycle and a car, as well as head-on collisions (see video below). The result is that the airbag, by protecting the rider's upper body, significantly reduces the risk of injury. What's more, test results show a 22% reduction in the risk of serious injury when a motorcyclist is fitted with an airbag.
A variety of airbag systems on the market
Several types of airbag system are already available on the market, differentiated mainly by their method of activation. Mechanical systems are activated by a cable connecting the rider to the motorcycle, while electronic systems are autonomous and operate via sensors. These systems can be integrated into separate vests or protective clothing.
Airbags for motorcyclists: on the road to widespread use?
In several countries, discussions are underway to make these systems compulsory, first and foremost in motor sport competitions. In fact, this year marks a turning point, with the introduction of airbag wearing for all speed competitions held on major circuits. For this to happen, electronically activated systems (complying with standard EN 1621-5) need to be formally registered and adopted at European level. More than thirty airbag references conforming to the requirements of the French Motorcycling Federation are already available and can be used in competition.
Now more than ever, two-wheeler riders are urged to keep abreast of these developments to ensure their safety and comply with the new regulations.
