News Pierer Mobility: the brakes on KTM's relaunch?

Austrian brand KTM, a benchmark in the motorcycle world for its racing prowess and innovation, is currently going through an unprecedented financial crisis, and the trend shows no sign of reversing. Here's a look at the latest situation.

Pierer Mobility on alert: a fragile global context

The manufacturer and its owner group, Pierer Mobility, have been forced to carry out a drastic restructuring to cope with a substantial loss of 2.5 billion euros, jeopardizing the company's financial equilibrium. Economic difficulties in the USA and Europe have led to a 10-15% drop in motorcycle sales in key markets. Rising interest rates and economic stagnation, particularly in Germany, are affecting consumers and weighing heavily on the sector. In Europe as a whole, only entry-level motorcycles are keeping sales afloat.

To offset this decline in its traditional markets, Pierer Mobility is redirecting its efforts towards Asia, with a focus on India, where sales are more resilient to economic uncertainties.

Pierer/KTM undergoes radical restructuring in the face of the crisis

The KTM Group is not one for half-measures. As a result, a number of strategic actions are planned to turn things around.

The departure of the KTM 'T', a symbol of the company's new direction

One of the most striking announcements of this restructuring is the departure of Hubert Trunkenpolz, KTM's emblematic 'T'. An historic figure and pillar of the company, Trunkenpolz had joined the Board of Directors in 2023 as Chairman. H. Trunkenpolz's departure from the Group, made inevitable by the financial situation, marks a major break with KTM's history.

Renewal is needed at Pierer/KTM, and Hubert Trunkenpolz is not the only one to pay the price.

Other influential members of Pierer Mobility AG, such as Alex Pierer, Florian Kecht and Rudolf Wiesbeck, will also be stepping down, leaving Stefan Pierer (CEO) and Gottfried Neumeister (co-CEO) alone at the helm.

Inventory reduction and strategic reorientation

H. Trunkenpolz's last words before stepping down:
We damaged the KTM brand with overproduction and quality problems, and now we have to correct that. KTM motorcycles must once again embody the essence of the brand.

To reduce production costs, Pierer Mobility plans to move more production to countries with lower labor costs, strengthening its collaborations with CFMoto in China and Bajaj in India. While this strategic transfer will save costs, it nevertheless raises the question of quality, the pillar of KTM's reputation. Management assures us, however, that standards will remain high, even at the new facilities abroad.

In addition to downsizing, which has already affected 300 employees in Austria, KTM is still considering reducing production and Pierer is exploring the sale of secondary brands such as GASGAS or Husqvarna. This refocusing would enable resources to be concentrated on the most profitable segments, essential to overcoming this financial crisis.

Financial forecasts for 2024 revoked: KTM in survival mode?

Pierer Mobility AG has withdrawn its financial forecasts for the second half of 2024, abandoning its original target of balanced or slightly positive profits. The company noted that economic conditions had proved more difficult than expected, strongly impacting results. This announcement led to a sharp reaction on the stock market, with the share price falling by up to 23% on Tuesday.

A few weeks ago, Raphael Crambes, manager of KTM's French branch, reassured us that"the group is not in the process of taking a dive". Since then, other measures aimed at avoiding a crash, including the reduction from 6 to 2 members of the listed holding company's management board, have accentuated the fact that KTM is at a major turning point in its history.

While it's fair to say that the brand remains determined to reinvent itself in order to overcome this crisis, the road to recovery looks sinuous and uncertain. Even for a leader in innovation and performance who is also considering a return to MotoGP, probably in 2027. So, is the realization (too) late or not? Will KTM weather the financial storm? So many questions that, for the time being, remain unanswered.
