presentation of the 961 Commando L.E. 'Manx' 2024
In Norton's 125-year history, there was one episode that will remain etched in motorcycle history forever: the Manx. One of the most legendary racing motorcycles ever made. Time and legend are now reflected in this limited edition 961 Commando. With a tribute color scheme and a few artifacts, the British bike relives great moments from its sporting past.
This Commando comes in a beautiful grey. But not in the same definition as the standard "Manx Platinum" grey. Here, only the fuel tank receives this hue, with no edging, no frills, no artifice, in order to be as pure as possible and recall this particularly emblematic part on the Manx of yesteryear.
To support this stance, a number of elements are painted black: the rear shell, the sides under the seat, the Öhlins inverted fork with its radial brake caliper mounts, the footpeg plates, and a large part of the engine.
But Norton couldn't resist adding chrome to the rims, side covers, exhaust system and cylinder head cover.
The Commando L.E Manx also gets a seat cover with a 125th anniversary emblem, as well as a carbon windscreen and chain guard.
This Commando doesn't push its heritage so far as to adopt a single-cylinder engine. Its heart is still the 77-hp air-cooled parallel twin. Mechanics, chassis and dynamics are the same as those of the Commando Café-Racer.
Why is the Manx so important to Norton? With its 350 and 500 versions, the bike won the Tourist Trophy 13 times. Above all, it was so competitive that it was produced from 1937 to 1962, and competed until 1970. What was originally called the "International Racing Model" also won the Bol d'Or 7 times, set an insane number of records and won world GP titles.
This special series is part of a collection of no more than 125 examples. If you're thinking of going further than just buying one of these Norton 961 Commando Limited Edition "Manx" models, it's actually possible to build a real Manx. Indeed, a certain Andy Molnar bought back the rights a few years ago to remanufacture Manx parts. All necessary parts can be purchased from Manx.co.uk. From the engine to the Featherbed frame to the carburetor, everything is available.
