presentation of the F1 1992

At the end of the 80s, the Norton brand attempted a comeback. For this comeback, the British brand chose a different path from the rest of motorcycle production. The new range was equipped with Wankel rotary engines. While the first models were unattractive, with the Interpol 2 (designed for the British police force), the Classic (a basic roadster) and the Commander (a GT), the sporty F1 caused much more of a stir when it came out in 1990.

the design is simple, pure and very British. It is the work of Seymour-Powell, who also designed the much less successful Commander.

this machine is built around a specific 588cc Wankel birotor engine (designed for the F1 and Commander). This engine is water-cooled, whereas the less efficient Interpol and Classic models were air-cooled.

for the F1, the engine develops 95 hp and 8.8 m.kg of torque (figures close to those of a Ducati 851 S, for example). The drivetrain is smooth, linear and virtually vibration-free. While this may detract from driving pleasure, it is highly efficient. Acceleration is brisk, and the bike reaches a top speed of around 250 km/h.

the chassis perfectly matches the engine's character. Neutral and very well suspended, the F1 takes big corners with a feeling of total confidence.

its sporting qualities were confirmed by several British championship titles, including the 1992 TT won by Steve HISLOP. The Norton F1 was produced in small series and marketed in France on a fairly confidential basis at an astronomical price - the price of uniqueness.

the rotary engine adventure was followed by the F2, which also failed to revive the brand. Since then, Norton has regularly produced prototypes that have never been followed up. For now......
