presentation of the 400 GSX-R 1984

The GSX-R saga began with the 750 in 1985. But a little digging reveals that the extraordinary story of these 4 sporty letters began a little earlier, with the GSX-R400.

When Suzuki unveiled this little bombshell (code GK71B) in March 1984, the motorcycle world was turned upside down. This lightweight machine, inspired by the endurance championship-winning GS1000R, marked the start of a revolution in the 400 cm3 sportbike segment. A concentrate of competition-derived technology, at the service of accessibility and on-road performance.

A history born on the track

The GSX-R400 takes its DNA from the GS1000R, Suzuki's winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1983. Developed under the direction of Etsuo Yakouchi, the bike is designed as a homologated racing replica. It features an ALBOX aluminum frame with multiple ribs, a rarity in the 400 cm3 segment at the time.

Dynamics and sensations

With a power-to-weight ratio of 2.57 kg/hp, this sports bike outperformed even the RG250 Gamma 2-stroke. Its top speed was close to 175 - 180 km/h, and its 0-100 km/h time was 4.5 to 4.6 seconds - impressive figures for the time.

Power was linear, the bike ultra-handy, and braking: a benchmark for a 400, with two 4-piston calipers, very rare at the time.

Design, ergonomics and visual identity

Adopting the GS1000R's twin headlights and fairing, the GSX-R400 has an assertive, sporty look. Its visual identity is instantly recognizable. The riding position is track-oriented, yet accessible enough for everyday use.

Weaknesses & weaknesses

Insufficient cooling (1984 version)
Not yet equipped with the SACS (Suzuki Advanced Cooling System), the 1984 is water-cooled - which, at the time, limited its durability at high revs. SACS, introduced in 1985, combines air and oil for enhanced thermal robustness.

Non-adjustable rear suspension

The standard "Full Floater" swingarm offers no adjustment. A number of reviewers have pointed to the approximate cornering behavior at high speeds, and perfectible comfort on bumpy roads.

No fine-tuning

With no adjustable suspension, the bike imposes a strict compromise between sportiness and comfort. Demanding riders will have to turn to SP versions or higher-quality parts to fine-tune its efficiency.

Post-1984 developments:

1985: introduction of SACS, addition of a fuel level indicator, optimized carburetion for greater smoothness at low revs.
1986-1987: shortened frame, slightly revised power, introduction of mixed air/oil cooling, first restyling with square headlight, then return to twin headlights.
1988-1989: SP versions with adjustable suspension, new Tokico 4-piston brakes, modernized rims, revised fairing.
1990-1992: all-new frame, inverted forks, more torque but lower power output (60 hp). Final model GSX-R400R produced until 1996.

The 1984 Suzuki GSX-R400 was much more than just a model: it was the spark of a new era for Suzuki and for compact sportbikes. With its advanced mechanics, aluminum chassis and track handling, it set standards that its rivals would struggle to match. Despite some weaknesses (cooling, suspension), it remains a technical icon and a motorcycle for fans of the saga.
