The Light-cycle motorcycle from the film Tron Ares

presentation of the Lightcycle 3 2025

The Light Cycle was originally a video game designed by Kevin Flynn for ENCOM. This vehicle takes on a charismatic importance in the Tron saga, evolving towards ever greater sophistication and becoming an emblematic element of the films.

It all starts with a simple stick with high polymorphic capacity, which transforms into a motorcycle once activated. The world of Tron allows us to break free from the limited rules of our universe, to design vehicles that can be built using numeric-quantum processes almost immediately.

Unlike Tron Legacy's Light-Cycle, here the rider is not "fused" but integrated. He is one with the motorcycle, but no longer part of its body. On starting up, the Light Cycle installs the protective elements on the rider, then tilts the handlebars forward to adopt an elongated, aerodynamic position.

The motorization, like the fuel, leaves much to the imagination. It's safe to assume that some kind of fusion micro-generator sits at the center of the bike. More than just moving the machine, the system for projecting a high-density laser trail involves colossal energy production.

The weaponry is still up to date, with an evolution of the light wall. Until now, it destroyed other machines by obstructing them. This time, it can also cut them, surgically, instantly and absolutely.

Each wheel... let's call them hollowed-out guide spheres... does without hubs, like the Tarso Marques Concept Dumont, creating a sensational effect. The braking system consists of a gigantic perimeter disc in the center of each wheel, clamped by a huge caliper. With pistons and pads? Unlikely. Fiction would lead us to an electro-magnetic system.

The first Light-cycle had gone beyond its original function as a weapon in a closed game to allow Kevin Flynn and his companions to escape the combat grid. The second will evolve solely in an arena for the sadistic pleasure of Clu (Codified Likeness Utility), where this time it will be Sam Flynn, Kevin's son, at the handlebars. The 3rd generation model will come to our world, with staggering consequences for the inhabitants. But always an extraordinary visual and lighting presence!

The real thing

Our level of technology is a long way from being able to create such vehicles. But for the making of the film, the Light Cycle did come into being in a real, physical way.

For Tron: Ares, proxy cycles were built on electric motorcycle frames, with extended wheelbases, rear swingarms and real light sources. Next, the team built magnificent prototypes of immobile light-cycles. However, features such as hubless wheels made them impossible to use in real-life conditions. But giving the impression that they could work was the work of a team led by three key people: concept illustrator Haisu Wang; modeler, designer and engineer Joe Hura (whose modeling in SolidWorks was so accurate that the designers were able to cut out the exact parts of the light-cycle from his model) and vehicle art director Rob Johnson, who turned art into concrete reality. This gave the actors a more realistic posture and feel. The digital skinning did the rest.

Once the prototype was perfected, the model was handed over to the builders, who mainly used milled aluminum. Vehicle coordinator Tom Katinic then supplied his library of automotive finishes from all the major manufacturers. The colors were chosen and tested on parts in different lighting conditions, including no light at all: the light-cycles feature a stealth mode, where the lighting is dimmed or completely switched off. The team's conclusions were then presented to director Joachim Ronning, who made the final choice.

Speaking of the proxy cycle, visual effects coordinator Cameron Waldbauer confides: " We knew that the actors would be driving at over 200 km/h in the city, towed by a truck in the rain. Against a green backdrop, they would clash with each other on the street and hit parked cars. It was inconceivable to waste production time waiting for someone to repair the parts of a Light-cycle. So they were designed from the outset to be robust. 10,000 custom LEDs were soldered inside, and we used a high-gloss automotive finish to prevent flaking. It took a lot of work, but the end result is really great. " What's more, each LED panel could be controlled independently by the lighting department via a DMX card, allowing the lighting to be adjusted according to the needs of the scene.

And the film?

TRON: ARES follows the astonishing adventure of a highly sophisticated digital program named Ares, sent out into the real world on a perilous mission, marking humanity's first encounter with beings endowed with artificial intelligence.

As Ares discovers his surroundings and encounters humanity for the first time, his level of awareness and knowledge begins to evolve. He finds an unexpected ally in Eve Kim, a brilliant technologist, computer programmer and current president of ENCOM, who pursues her own quest to discover an essential code written by Kevin Flynn.

Betraying orders and pursued relentlessly, the two will have to fight not only for their survival, but also for a future where technology and humanity can finally meet..
