Yamaha TX 750: the mechanical ambition of an era in transition
In the 1970s, the world motorcycling landscape was changing. Yamaha, until then firmly rooted in the production of light, sporty motorcycles, decided to play in the big league with the TX 750, a machine as ambitious as it was controversial.
A Japanese response to European domination
Unveiled in 1972 and marketed for the 1973 model year, the Yamaha TX 750 was Iwata's attempt to rival the British twins from Triumph and Norton, as well as BMW's parallel-twin machines. Equipped with a 743 cm³ single overhead cam (SOHC) parallel-twin engine, the TX 750 boasts around 63 hp at 7,500 rpm, promising performance worthy of European standards, but with Japanese reliability as a bonus - at least on paper.
Omni-Phase Balancer: innovation or curse?
The heart of the TX 750's technology lies in its exclusive balancing system, the Omni-Phase Balancer. This consists of two counter-rotating balancer shafts designed to reduce the vibrations inherent in parallel-twin engines. Although innovative, this technical solution proved to be one of the bike's Achilles' heels. Indeed, early models suffered from lubrication and overheating problems associated with this complex system, leading to premature engine failure and a tarnished reputation from the outset.

Sober design, solid chassis
Visually, the TX 750 adopts a classic, elegant line: curved fuel tank, flat seat, two-in-two chrome exhausts, and dual needle instrumentation. The double-cradle steel frame, combined with a telescopic front fork and adjustable rear shock absorbers, ensures decent handling for the era. With a dry weight of around 230 kg, the TX 750 isn't light, but it's still easy to handle thanks to a well-designed center of gravity.
A bitter commercial failure
Despite its potential, the TX 750 was hit hard by both internal competition - notably from the very popular XS 650 - and external competition, dominated by the explosion of Japanese four-cylinders such as the Honda CB750. Mechanical shortcomings don't help either: many customers, seduced by the technical specifications, find themselves disappointed by the reliability. Yamaha did try to make improvements in 1974 (new crankcase, better lubrication, redesigned oil system), but the damage was done. The TX 750 quietly disappeared from the catalog in 1975.
