presentation of the FZ 250 Phazer 1985
With the emergence of the motorcycle market in the 1980s, Yamaha launched a daring model: the FZ 250 Phazer. Introduced in 1985, this sporty liquid-cooled two-and-a-half-cylinder 4-stroke marked a technical watershed - delivering on-road performance comparable to the two-strokes of the day, in an innovative four-stroke format.
Cutting-edge mechanics in a compact format
The FZ 250 Phazer is based on Yamaha's "Genesis" engine concept: a 249 cc DOHC block with four valves per cylinder, inclined 45° forward to improve airflow thanks to its downdraft carburetors - a real technical feat for a 250 cc.
Maximum rpm is 16,000, with peak power of 45.hp (33 kW) at 14,500 rpm, and torque of 2.5 mkg at 11,500 rpm. This high-rpm powerband offered exceptional responsiveness, even against much larger models.
With a dry weight of 138 kg (156 kg in running order), the Phazer was in the featherweight category, promoting agile cornering and remarkable handling.
Innovative design and unique positioning
Visually, the 250 Phazer is striking for its semi fairing integrated into the fuel tank, a fluid, modern aesthetic at the time. This design was directly inspired by the FZ 750, and already heralded the stylistic line of the future Fazer range - of which the 600 was a huge success.
16-inch wheels front and rear reduce the center of gravity for more stable, agile cornering, enabling high corner entry speeds despite the compact engine.
Track performance and overall impression
The FZ 250 Phazer was designed to excel on the racetrack. In local competitions in Japan, notably in the SP250F class, it outclassed 2-stroke competitors thanks to its cornering speed and extremely wide powerband - from 8,000 to 16,000 rpm.

Produced mainly in Japan in 1985 and 1986 (codenamed Model 1HX), the FZ 250 Phazer was never widely distributed in Europe, making it a rare and little-known motorcycle.
It directly inspired later nomenclature: the name "Phazer" would later become "Fazer", and the Genesis concept would endure throughout the FZ/Fazer range.
Why did the FZ 250 Phazer make history?
At a time when 250cc sports bikes were dominated by two-strokes, Yamaha dared to create a small, compact 4-stroke, capable of rivaling performance while remaining reliable and sovereign at high revs.
The engine's ability to exceed 16,000 rpm, its power-to-weight ratio, and its maneuverability made it an avant-garde model.
