presentation of the XTZ 750 Super Ténéré 1989
In the pantheon of adventure bikes, few names resonate with as much aura as that of the Yamaha Super Ténéré. Born of the golden age of rally-raid, the XTZ 750 wasn't just a racing bike. It was a symbol of durability, performance and a spirit of adventure. More than three decades after its launch, it remains an icon, revered by a generation of motorcyclists who sought a machine capable of taking them everywhere, from country roads to the most remote trails.
Rally-raid heritage
To understand the XTZ 750, you first need to immerse yourself in the ruthless world of the Paris-Dakar Rally of the 1980s. Yamaha was a major player in this competition, taking several victories with its XT 600 Ténéré, a bike that became synonymous with the event. However, the evolution of the competition, with the arrival of increasingly powerful twin-cylinder rivals such as the Honda Africa Twin, prompted Yamaha to react.
In response, Yamaha developed an entirely new machine, not only for rallying, but also for the growing consumer market of "Adventure Bikes". The name "Super Ténéré" paid tribute to past successes while signaling a significant increase in power and capability. The aim was to create a motorcycle that combined the ruggedness of a rally machine with the comfort and versatility needed for long-distance travel.
The heart of the desert
The Super Ténéré is powered by a 749 cm3 parallel-twin engine, with 5 valves per cylinder. This engine, with its 360-degree timing, produced a distinctive sound and 70 horsepower. Its 5-valve design, dubbed "Genesis" by Yamaha, aimed to optimize airflow for better high-rpm performance. It offered an excellent compromise between low-end smoothness and the power needed for long desert straights.
The bike was built around a double-cradle steel chassis, with the robustness essential for rough terrain. Its long-travel suspension, high ground clearance, 43 mm fork and Cantilever rear monoshock absorbed shocks and uneven terrain with remarkable ease.
Its look was directly inspired by the rally bikes of the time, with a large 26-liter fuel tank, a protective fork-head fairing with high bubble, and a wide, comfortable seat. The dual headlights, characteristic of many adventure bikes of the time, gave it the air of a ready-made war machine.
Market impact and heritage
The Super Ténéré was positioned as a direct competitor to the Honda Africa Twin (XRV750) and the BMW R 100 GS. Strong heads, but the Yam' was just as at home on freeways as it was on dirt roads.
The engine, in particular, earned a reputation for near-indestructibility. Numerous owners recount having covered hundreds of thousands of kilometers with their XTZ 750 without encountering any major problems, cementing its status as the ideal machine for long-distance travel.
Although production ceased in 1996, the Super Ténéré has developed a massive and enduring cult following. Its mechanical simplicity, compared with modern motorcycles, makes it easy to maintain and repair, a major asset for travelers.
Competition success and a name steeped in history
Although the production version was designed for the general public, its rally genes were very much in evidence. Yamaha fielded factory versions of the XTZ 750 on the Dakar, ridden by legends such as Stéphane Peterhansel. The factory version, the Yamaha YZE 750 T, was a resounding success. Peterhansel won the Dakar in 1991 and 1992 on the YZE 750, then on the YZE 850T, reinforcing the link between the name "Super Ténéré" and victory.
The Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Ténéré is more than just a big trail bike. It's a benchmark, an emblematic motorcycle from the era when adventure bikes were rugged, simple and built to withstand whatever the planet could throw at them. Just the thing to set off in search of your own adventure.
