presentation of the FZ 750 1985

introduced in 1985, the Yamaha FZ 750 is perhaps one of the finest failures of the tuning fork brand. Yet this machine was very well born, and sold quite well until 1993, when it was definitively replaced by the YZF 750 R. And the reason for this was very simple: the Suzuki GSX-R 750

In that year, Suzuki launched the first production 750cc with 100 hp, and adorned it with extreme aesthetics: a superpsort for racing during the week and racing at weekends.

Yamaha, however, had some very convincing arguments. Admittedly, the engine wasn't the first 100-hp model (indeed, some sources indicate that the FZ made only 95.5 hp in 1985, and didn't reach 100 hp until 1987), but its design was far more innovative than that of the GSX-R: 20-valve cylinder head, 45° water-cooled cylinder block inclination, vertical carburetor positioning and 5-stage crankcase.

And this engine is good, very good: powerful, torquey and rich in impressions. This new 4-cylinder is more than a match for its direct competitor. The 5 valves per cylinder technology (3 intake, 2 exhaust) provides unrivalled flexibility. Yamaha entered an FZ at Le Mans in its very first year. On its first appearance, it finished on the podium: 3rd behind 2 Suzukis, including one from SERT (one wonders if they didn't do it on purpose, to try and ruin the FZ's career).

Yamaha FZ 750 1985 - 1Yamaha FZ 750 1985 - 1

Yamaha FZ 750 1985The chassis is more classic. The frame has a double steel cradle, but shows real sporting qualities. The front axle is fitted with a 16-inch wheel, very much in vogue at the time, intended to provide greater handling without compromising the GSXR's bike-like qualities. The FZ oscillates between classicism and modernity, taking the best of both. And if it's less playful than the Suzuki, it's also more reassuring and a little stiffer.

Aesthetically, the picture is more or less the same as for the chassis: less extreme than the rival scarecrow, more sober and, for some, classier, but also less stunning.

The FZ was in fact a real success. Why didn't it make more of an impression on bikers, many of whom have now forgotten all about it? It simply got caught out by a first-rate hustler who put it in the shade. She had a fairly successful commercial career, requiring little upgrading as the base was so good. Over time, it gained a full fairing and wheels that accepted the latest pneumatic mounts, and quietly disappeared from the catalog in 1993.

Great bike in 85 I always had this bike in my heart Rating : 5/5
French Model 1985
Bought used in 1988 with 7500 km, I'm still driving with 293000 km with the original engine. Exceptional reliability. Rating : 5/5

Hello. I bought this bike in April 1991 with 2000kms. I loved it. Rating : 5/5

Excellent machine. I've had three. Never had any notable problems. For those who claim that electrical problems were commonplace, well, I have no idea what they're talking about! Rating : 5/5

My 1st 100hp, which I kept for almost 4 years. Never had any problems (apart from normal wear and tear), a crazy potato (when it's your 1st 100hp). I made the mistake of getting back on it almost 15 years later, after 3 R1s, 2 Thunderaces and 3 FZR1000s.
I blamed myself because I ruined the feeling of a "motorcycle out of the ordinary" that I had of it.
Don't kill your dreams, leave them as they are! <3

Ditto, first 100 hp, kept 2 years and 30,000 kms, but unlike you, lots of electrical problems. Like all yams of the time. Good engine, but bad chassis, no wonder the gsxr sold better :-) Ah, the 1991 750 gsxr... Rating : 2/5
Inoubliable FZ
French Model 1985
My 1st 100 hp motorcycle, with a full engine, no slouch when it comes to sensations and unfailing reliability! Of course, comfort was not perfect, especially when riding a duo, but what a lot of miles on it! It was only replaced in my heart by… the 1000 fazer that accompanied me for 10 years! Rating : 4/5
French Model 1985
A good, low-maintenance motorcycle, with low fuel consumption if you're careful with the throttle. Braking is a little light compared with modern motorcycles, but this engine is full of life and lasts for 200km of highway at over 180 without any worry of overheating. Rating : 4/5
French Model 1985
My first motorcycle. Young licence (less than 6 months old, at 46).

Certainly not the easiest to start with. But, ...., it's
my first!!!
