presentation of the XSR 900 Yard Built - Alter par Dab Motors - 2018
Yamaha Yard Built projects are always distinguished by their uniqueness, and this is once again the case today. Biarritz-based Dab Motors has opted for futuristic aesthetics and exceptional technologies for this latest customized model. Renowned for its relaxed atmosphere, magnificent beaches and dream setting, Biarritz has been a top destination for holidaymakers for decades. Based in this town on the Basque coast, however, Dab Motors has set aside its casual attitude to project itself into the future with the Yamaha XSR 900. Using cutting-edge design techniques and unrivalled know-how, the manufacturer has produced a machine straight out of the 22nd century: the ALTER.
From the outset, the team was impressed by the XSR 900's innovative lines and modern yet retro design. They realized that its lightweight chassis, brimming with personality, and sporty engine would lend themselves perfectly to a futuristic concept. From the moment Dab Motors got its hands on this highly customizable Sports Heritage motorcycle, its mastery of technology was revealed in all its glory. Using 3D modeling and advanced rendering techniques, the company designed a customized motorcycle in an almost exclusively digital environment. It then exploited the data accumulated from these modeling techniques and the schematics created in the virtual workspace, finally harnessing robots to build this mechanical marvel.
Bringing its designs to life with manufacturing machines, the manufacturer 3D printed high-quality, extremely resistant components: a rear frame buckle, an upper fork crown, headlamp risers and brackets. The exhaust system is the fruit of collaboration between Dab Motors and a trusted partner. The handlebars have been replaced, as have the grips, brake fluid reservoir and mirrors. The bike also features an innovative, ultra-light, eco-friendly flax-fibre cover. The lighting system also pushes the limits, with an intelligent LED system controlled by an Arduino microcontroller. All these elements combine with higher-quality brakes, suspensions signed by industry giant Öhlins (STX 46 shock absorber and NIX 30 cartridge kit) and other parts to form a high-performance object straight from the future!
"Yard Built models are often pictured as tributes to the past, and perhaps rightly so," says Antoine Clémot, Motorcycle Product Manager at Yamaha Motor Europe."Yamaha can draw on a rich history of iconic designs and techniques. But we also use them as components to conduct experiments. They are opportunities to innovate, to play with minimalist aesthetics and new ideas. So to discover a machine like this is simply incredible. Dab Motors is way ahead of other manufacturers when it comes to technology; it's a pleasure to see and an honor to be part of this project. The design is remarkable, and the bike looks like something out of a science-fiction movie. Beyond that, it's the manufacturing processes that really blew me away."
"In a world where technology is king, it would be a shame to confine ourselves to yesterday's know-how," notes Simon Dabadie, founder of Dab Motors."We need to explore all practices, calling on new techniques and drawing inspiration from them. We want to pique the public's curiosity by using new types of materials, keeping a critical eye and testing every idea we come up with. The idea is not to limit ourselves, but rather to be open to potentially revolutionary methods. 3D design, virtual engineering, 3D simulation, rendering techniques: we are experimenting with these possibilities and have achieved incredible results thanks to them. It's by looking to the future that we can develop cutting-edge models. All this will transform the way we create and personalize motorcycles. Today we have an unlimited number of creative tools that cannot exist within traditional processes."
