Trials has also begun its electric transformation. Yamaha is taking its TY-E to the next level with version 2.0, with a view to achieving carbon neutrality for leisure bikes. The company plans to enter this prototype in some rounds of the 2022 FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) trials world championship.

In 2021, the company revised Yamaha Motor Group's 2050 environmental plan, originally formulated in 2018, and set a new goal of aiming for carbon neutrality in all its business activities - including the life cycle of its products - by 2050.

The TY-E 2.0 development project currently underway represents Yamaha's unique approach to achieving carbon neutrality. As part of its FUN x EV development concept, the TY-E 2.0 aims to offer more fun than internal combustion engines by taking advantage of the unique characteristics of electric vehicles, such as immediate low-end torque and strong acceleration.

Development of the TY-E 2.0 has progressed on the basis of the TY-E presented in 2018. The model features a new composite laminate monocoque frame incorporating a higher-performance electric power unit, combining mechanical parts and electronic control. It also benefits from a new lightweight battery with a capacity around 2.5 times greater than its predecessor.

The new TY-E 2.0 will compete in the FIM Trials World Championship from June 2022. Kenichi Kuroyama of the Yamaha Factory Racing Team, who is also in charge of its development, will be the rider. The TY-E 2.0 will be on display on the Yamaha Motor stand at the 49th Tokyo Motorcycle Show, March 25-27.

laminated composite monocoque frame

The TY-E 2.0 uses a monocoque frame made from composite laminates to contribute to lighter weight and optimum rigidity. The layout of the power unit and battery has been revised to achieve a significantly lower center of gravity than on the previous model.

new lightweight battery with approximately 2.5 times greater capacity

Yamaha has developed a new high-capacity battery (2.5 times greater than that of the previous model), while keeping the weight increase to around 20%.

improved power unit through optimized mechanical parts and electronic control

Based on the previous model, traction has been improved by combining mechanical parts such as the clutch and flywheel, with carefully tuned electronic control for the engine, capable of measuring subtle changes in grip.
