presentation of the R 850 GS 2000

The BM trail bike has been around for over 25 years, and benefits from the same high standards as the rest of the Bavarian manufacturer's range. Technology, standing and other refinements are the hallmarks of the propeller-driven brand, and are also to be found on this 850 GS. With its styling based on that of the 1100, it could be mistaken for the latter...

until you read the sticker on the fuel tank. Of course, the twin has lost some muscle as it has dropped to 848 cm3. But fortunately, it retains its suppleness (thanks to fuel injection) and vigor. The chassis is beyond reproach. The Telelever's anti-dive action makes for reassuring, efficient riding, while the Paralever with integrated cardan shaft erases the shortcomings of this type of transmission. You'll want to play with this BM, but you can't really venture out on the trails. The bike prefers the secondary network, where it's at its best. The desire to carve up the road gradually takes hold of the rider. Even so, he'll have to limit motorway travel, as the protection is just right. It's not enough to look like the big sister, as it's the big sister that's in the public eye.

Consommation excessive
Handling and roadholding are excellent. On the other hand, the fuel consumption figures given in the technical data sheets are very, very, very optimistic. When driving slowly, I always flirt with 10 liters per 100 km, loaded or not. A far cry from the 5.5 claimed. Rating : 5/5
