presentation of the K 1600 GTL Exclusive 2016
a motorcycle of excellence in the field of sport-tinged Grand Touring, the BMW K 1600 GTL raises its level of luxury even further in this Exclusive version. It takes the opportunity to unveil a number of exclusive features and innovations. And all with the kind of class that only the Bavarian brand can distill, without going overboard with glitz and glamour.
the K 1600 GTL is a blend of 6-cylinder symphony, technology and opulence. Equipped as standard with 160 hp, a copious 17.8 mkg of torque, more than 12 mkg of which is available as soon as the throttle is turned 2 mm, and 3 driving modes, all that was missing was the bottom of the horn to savor the abundance. And now it's done. Exclusive here means extra equipment, which we should go into a little more detail about.
i'll spare you the slightly reworked instrumentation and the extra chrome touches. Let's focus instead on the passenger, who is the big winner of this + version. The Exclusive takes good care of his comfort: the seat is longer and wider, and a pair of armrests attach to the top case, as does a heated backrest in the lower section. For the rider, the treats are more technical. It's mainly the electronics that are getting stronger. A selection of items from the options catalog are fitted as standard. It starts with traction control, then the crew can take advantage of ESA II pilot-controlled suspension, back to the driver with tire pressure control and a plethora of solutions behind the headlight glass. These are self-adapting directional headlamps with xenon and LED daytime running lights, backed up by a duo of additional projectors on the sides of the fairing. Daytime running lights are activated automatically by a brightness sensor, or can replace the main headlight by manual action on the part of the driver. What's more, at dusk or when entering a tunnel, the bike automatically switches to headlight mode.
2016 offers a few bonuses: ABS Pro is standard equipment. This improved anti-lock braking system varies braking pressure according to various parameters (cornering, lateral acceleration, angle of rotation). As a result, the more the bike is on an angle, the less the jaws are used, to avoid losing the front end when cornering.
There's also the Control Brake Light, a system that flashes the brake light faster or slower depending on the intensity of emergency braking, with the warning light coming on at the end of the deceleration phase. This way, the people behind you can assess whether you're braking more or less hard, and whether the situation up ahead sucks.

is that all? No, the chips and sensors can do even more. Like Hill Start Control, for easy hill starts. Once activated, the gizmo uses the ABS to block the front brake and the bike can wait quietly on the slope. Slam into gear or press the brake and the system disengages. Oh yes, be careful, it's not a parking brake; if you park the bike on a hill with this procedure, you're not sure to find it standing up once the ignition has been switched off.
Have you seen the key? Hhhuummm, I smell extra functions. And they're called DWA anti-theft and Keyless Ride. Once the key is within 2 meters of the motorcycle (i.e., in the pannier, backpack or lady's curlers), the whole bike unlocks itself: steering, ignition, fuel filler flap and central locking. No need to put the key in the hatch to open it: just pull the lever.
luxury also means things that can be hidden away or made to look better without showing. Like the radio antenna now stashed in the top case, or the 4-coat paint job. What we can't quite digest is that the GPS is still in the accessories catalog. The latter has been considerably reduced.
The pinnacle of the BMW Motorrad range, this K 1600 GTL pushes the limits of refinement, a true showcase of Grand Touring motorcycling. These qualities will be negotiated at a firm price, but it's going to be very hard to find anything better.
